whey

Targets the midsection in what way? ? ?

Whey is just a simpler form of protein in all reality, it's a quick and easy way to get nutrients to the body and the muscles when they need it, if eating the same amount is what is in the drink, it would take longer for the body to break down, therefore, a drink is simple, easy, and fast digesting, allowing for recovery to start almost straight away.

Hope this helps.

I’m new to all this. I was at a not a vitamin store but where they sell bodybuilding supplements to kill time before my class started and I over heard a customer ask the employee what he can use to target his midsection and he was told that whey would do that.

Sounds like you accidentally walked into a GNC store. They really should put a warning over the door of those places. Something along the lines of 'Prepare to have your intelligence insulted and your wallet emptied'.

Anyway ...

Whey is a byproduct of the cheese making industry. Originally it is in a liquid form but it is then dried and processed using various techniques to make other food products. In terms of its use in protein supplements, you will find it listed as any of the following:
  • Bioactive Whey Fraction
  • Cross Flow Microfiltration Whey Isolate
  • Ion-exchanged Whey Isolate
  • Whey Isolate
  • Whey Concentrate
  • Casein
  • Hydrolysed Whey

Contrary to what you have heard, whey is not used to target your midsection. Whey or to be exact Protein, is consumed to make structural and biochemical reactions that are required for muscle contraction, cardiovascular function, immunity from disease through the production of antibodies and haemoglobin, and the repair of tissue.

If you are going to use supplements it is very important to understand what is in the various supplements and how they are going to interact with your body before you purchase them. So before you run out and start spending large amounts of money, spend some time and decide what your goal is. Do you want to bulk-up and add muscle mass or do you want to lose body fat and define your physique. Once you make that decision, then you will need to look at your current nutritional intake as diet is the key to changing your physique.

Spend a week writing things down in terms of your caloric, carb, protein, and fat intake values. You will be able to find all of this on the packaging of the products.
  • one gram of protein = 4 calories
  • one gram of carbs = 4 calories
  • one gram of fat = 9 calories

You will also need to know what your Basic Metabolic Rate (BMR) is:

Adult Male:
  • BMR = 66 + (6.3 x body weight in lbs.) + (12.9 x height in inches) - (6.8 x age in years)

Adult Female:
  • BMR = 665 + (4.3 x body weight in lbs.) + (4.7 x height in inches) - (4.7 x age in years)

Your BMR is a set value of how many calories your body requires to function at a resting position. You will use this value to determine how many calories you are going to need on a daily basis to achieve your goal.
  • If you are sedentary (little or no exercise) : Calorie-Calculation = BMR x 1.2
  • If you are lightly active (light exercise/sports 1-3 days/week) : Calorie-Calculation = BMR x 1.375
  • If you are moderatetely active (moderate exercise/sports 3-5 days/week) : Calorie-Calculation = BMR x 1.55
  • If you are very active (hard exercise/sports 6-7 days a week) : Calorie-Calculation = BMR x 1.725
  • If you are extra active (very hard exercise/sports & physical job or 2x training) : Calorie-Calculation = BMR x 1.9

Now that you know what whey is, what your nutritional intake is, what your BMR is, and what your daily caloric requirements are ... you can set a goal for yourself and we can start talking in more detail.

Don't be too upset by what the guys posted here. They really are a great group and they will help you. I think your question just caught them off-guard. I know it made me smile, lol. As was suggested, do a bit of research by reading the 'stickies' at the tops of the forums or by doing a Google. If you still can't find the answer to your question(s) then just post it up here.

Welcome to EF :)
