When Should I Drink A Whey Protein Shake?

I was talking to a a couple of friends about my current workout routine, and I mentioned to them that I was going to start drinking Whey Protein shakes after I workout. One of my friends told me that I should drink it BEFORE I workout, but another friend told me to drink one BEFORE and AFTER.

I'm so confused about it. I'm not sure which is better... or more accurate. Can anybody provide me some insight? Thanks.
 
Before like 45min to an hour before can be good for energy and along with anywhere between immediately and 30 mins after your workout you should slam a shake down.

Also casein protein blends or say cottage cheese is awesome because it takes hours to run through when whey is so quick.
 
I've heard that you don't really want anything in your system within an hour of lifting as you want your bodily processes to be completely devoted to your workout movements. I do not have a citation for this so if anyone can back that up or knock it down feel free, but it was a legitimate article I read a month ago.

Excuse me for semi hi-jacking this thread, but does it matter how fast you drink the protein shake? Normally I drink about 16 ounces of milk/30g of whey protein after a workout, but I finish it within like 30 seconds (2-3 gulps). Is that okay or should I lengthen it? it's a relative question :)
 
Depending on the last time you ate food, whey shakes should come immediately following the workout. you don't need one before your workout.

If you really want to get into it, take waxy maize 45 grams right after your workout followed by a protein shake 15 minutes after that. That is the best combo for replacing glycogen stores and the building blocks for repair.
