whats the deal with brown rice?

The brown rice that I eat is a medium grain and its more dense and chewy, as its brown. There is no way it is just dyed. And with bread, wholemeal flour is used rather than wheat flour in order to make wholemeal bread.

Thats right, but what i dont understand is why is it brown? Even though it is wholemeal and certainly different from rice. But the brown bit I dont understand.

Thanks ace. I think in the end im just being too padantic. See ive gone on one of these "ultimate health trips" where the only ultimator here is ultimatly denying what i really want.

i believe the white rice is bleached
 
I think brown rice is brown because it still have the natural husk on the outside of it. With white rice the covering has been removed to just show the white grain inside. That covering has lots of fiber in it, which is good, but it also take longer and more work (calories) for the body to break down brown rice compared to white. Why they're sometimes called complex carbs.
 
So many studies have proven white/brown/jasmine etc to be practically the same at the endo f the day

But why does it have to be brown? I hate advertising and their lies it makes me fear that its just normal rice with dye in it?

Also i have a suspision. (This might seem irrelevant at first but keep reading) I was once told by the people at the health store that shampoos arent suppose to foam up during the time you wash your hair, well infact, it makes no difference wether it does or not. However, the shampoo makers use an extra product in the ingredients so it does foam when you use it. Why? Well basicaly... she said its so people feel more like their hair is being washed. So maybe its the same idea with brown pasta and rice being dyed so people think there eating wholemeal. Even though they probably are, but its more of a reasurring thing or its easily spotable on shelves or something like that... Man if i was cereal box maker i would just dye all my products deep blue so they stand out from the rest like anything! Does all this make sense?


IMO their is a big taste difference with the rice. I know its not dye.. If so, than we are all in big trouble, because than who know what anyone is really eatiing..

Last time I supported a low carb diet, a mod here called me irresponsible. It IS a fact, a low carb diet is a way to increase lean bodymass, improve body composition, and lose junk weight. I'm a supporter.

agree that it def works. But I hate the way I feel when on low carbs for a long period of time. Moody, low energy. Even when cycling my carbs, still feel like crap. I rather go high carb, low fat. It all comes down to being in a deficit IMO. carb timing plays a big role as well. But I have had good success dieting this way. carbs are important for keeping your strength as well. Sure you know this Pinz, just wanted to post so some members can think about diff ways to diet other than just low carb.
 
I've read that what's important is the rate at which sugars can pass into the blood, and that for processed (whitened) foods the sugars are kind of "loose" passing very quickly, and all at once into the blood. Sugars in "brown" carbs are kind of attached to other things (like fiber), and as such pass more slowly into the blood stream. The brown carbs result in a more steady supply of energy, allowing the body to assimilate it better.
 
If we believe everything on Wikipedia, then we can believe:

Brown rice and white rice have similar number of calories, carbohydrates, and protein. The main differences between the two forms of rice lie in processing and nutritional content.
When only the outermost layer of a grain of rice (the husk) is removed, brown rice is produced. To produce white rice, the next layers underneath the husk (the bran layer and the germ) are removed, leaving mostly the starchy endosperm.

Several vitamins and dietary minerals are lost in this removal and the subsequent polishing process. A part of these missing nutrients, such as vitamin B1, vitamin B3, and iron are sometimes added back into the white rice making it "enriched", as food suppliers in the US are required to do by the Food and Drug Administration.

One mineral not added back into white rice is magnesium; one cup (195 g) of cooked long grain brown rice contains 84 mg of magnesium while one cup of white rice contains 19 mg.
When the bran layer is removed to make white rice, the oil in the bran is also removed. Rice bran oil may help lower LDL cholesterol.
Among other key sources of nutrition lost are small amounts of fatty acids and fiber.

Brown rice isn't made brown as part of a marketing scheme, it is brown naturally. The same can not be said about white rice.
