Ballmer: ''Full Guns'' on iPad is ''Job One Urgency''
^*facepalm*^

3:00 PM - August 1, 2010 by Marcus Yam - source: Tom's Hardware US

Windows 7 tablets to be Intel-based, not ARM, and they will print.

It's no great secret that Apple beat Microsoft (and basically everyone else) to the tablet market in the consumer space. Microsoft isn't happy about that.

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said that the company is hard at work in making a Windows-based tablet that'll go head-to-head against the iPad.

"They'll be shipping as soon as they are ready," Ballmer said. "It is job one urgency. No one is sleeping at the switch."

On the topic of Apple's success with the iPad, "they've sold certainly more than I'd like them to have sold."

While other companies are tuning special operating systems for its tablet devices, Microsoft is sticking with Windows 7.

"We have got to make things happen," he said. "We're in the process of doing that as we speak. We're working with our hardware partners. We're tuning Windows 7."

One nice side effect of having Windows 7 is that it'll be packed with features that many of us enjoy on our computers. "When you get your Windows 7 machine, it will print," Ballmer said. "Some people actually like to print every now and then."

Ballmer didn't comment when the tablets will be launching, other than "It ain't a long time from now." As for hardware, it'll be Intel-based rather than ARM.

"We're coming," he said. "We're coming full guns. The operating system is called Windows."

Woahoah yeah you better get right on that Microsoft! Especially now that it's, like, popular 'n shit. Because it'd be just asinine to ever try to beat Apple to the punch on something, just once, instead of the usual....

1. Let someone else create something
2. Point and laugh at it
3. Scramble to make your own when it gets mega popular
4. Throw billions into it until it can compete or
5. Scrap it if it can't

When will they learn they can't rely on this tactic anymore. I bet even Bill is starting to shake his head.

micfrosoft is panicking these days:

1) vista was a clusterfuck and companies are still slow to changeover to 7.
2) xbox 360 failures. and picking HD over blu-ray.
3) internet explorer = spyware central
4) apple making huge inroads on microsoft: iphone, ipad, ipod, macbook, mac desktop. none of which run windows.
5) more and more people focusing in on just web browsing. less and less need for windows.
6) fewer web developers using microsoft technology. the web is pretty much non-microsoft.
7) bing is a flop. just like microsoft missing out on the net.

their o/s is their bread and butter. without people needed windows - they are fucked. bye bye stock price. C'mon Gates didn't think he'd rule the world with shitty o/s's forever!

Apple is peaking on its current cycle right now. The funny part is Microsoft is just starting to follow them on this round.

But worry not... apple will rise again!

Yeah, it's a little disappointing to see them fragmented like they are. But I don't see it as different as IBM back in the day.
