"Flat stomach" is more about dropping bodyfat via diet & training / cardio vs doing thousands of sit-ups or any of that stuff.
Also when we talk about "diet" we're not talkign about "i eat healthy" - we're talking about fueling yourself for what you are trying to accomplish. For ex, when I diet for competition i focus primarily on diet & cardio (that's what's important for my body to drop bodyfat) - but I still cut on 1700 cals - I don't starve myself at all, but I do eat very specifically the things that I need to fuel heavier lifting days, manipulate my metabolism and sufficient protein & fat to drop bodyfat.
