Vegetarian - Is it possible?

Hello All-

Just joined and hope to get helpful inputs from experts out there.
I am mostly vegetarian. I don't mind eating eggs.

I don't like to eat chicken/fish/meat; but sometimes may be once / twice in a month when I am at restaurants I may take chicken / fish (meat is absolutely no no)

My general food items are: oatmeal, bread, rice, vegetable curries, beans, lentils, fruits, dry fruits, milk, honey.

I don't take any supplements, and I don't want to use steroids due to it's side effects.

I have been working out since last one year, but don't see much progress. I am 33.

Is it possible to grow big with veg diet? Is anyone here in the same boat and what to share some experience please? I also am not able to loose the flab around my tummy, a big disappointment after 1 year of regular workouts; 4 days a week.

Any input is highly appreciated. Please also advice any supplements that I should take that does not have any side effects and are infact good for health and also help in the bodybuilding progress.

Many Thanks.

Gonna be VERY VERY hard for you dude. The Food is what makes you grom supersetted with lots of sleep. And its not any food, it has to be the right food. WWwith your current diet Id STRONGLY advise some Whey, if not Soy Protein and eat/drink about 20 eggs a day or more.

Thanks buddy. I like your advice about Whey.

What should I be looking for in the nutrition facts label on Whey bottle? And how much should I consume pre / post workouts / on daily basis?

I used to eat a cup full sprouted and cooked soy, but got fed up with the taste. Will try and add that again as well in my food item.

I eat about 4 Eggs daily, guess that's not helping.. will increase it slowly to 20 hope I can manage the smell of boiled eggs. Or is it ok to cook it as Omlet?

I've trained many Vegetarians over the last 5 years and it's a huge hassle, so many of your protein sources are loaded with extra carbs/fats and are weak protein sources to begin with.

Your results will come 10 times slower than the people who are regular meat eaters.

Vegetarian + Bodybuilding just doesn't work Bro...

I am ready to make adjustments. Tell me what should I eat? If I start eating chicken and/or fish as replacement for one of the meal along with soy / whey protein, should that be good to start?

If you can introduce Chicken/Fish into your nutrition plan you'll have no worries. Soy really isn't a great source of protein, stick to Whey.

Every meal needs at least 20-30 grams of protein in it. Revolve the following protein sources throughout the day, spread over 5-6 meals.

Chicken (3.5 oz) - at least once a day
Fish (3.5oz) - at least once a day
Eggs (4 egg whites, 2 whole eggs)
Whey Protein (30-40 grams per serving) - Use this post-workout

There is no need to use Rice, Soy, Hemp Protein and other fad items. Stick to these basic sources and you'll be fine.

I've been a vegetarian for 10 years and I can pack on muscle mass just like everyone else. I make sure to consume at least 300 grams of protein each day, and I eat every 2 hours religiously. Here are the major foods in my diet:

1. Whey protein shakes (wake-up, before and after workouts, and just before bed)
2. Cottage Cheese
3. Bean & Cheese burriotos
4. Red beans & rice
5. Edemames
6. Boca burgers
7. Protein bars (recommend Clif Builder's bars)
8. Tofurkley Italian Sausages (these are fucking awesome!!!)

9. Unsalted nuts
10. Various snacks like cheese sticks or anything protein-based

Now I'll admit that I am more of a powerlifter than a bodybuilder, but I have well above average chest and shoulder size, with much of my muscle mass having been gained in the last 5 years. I can send you a few pics if you like. Just PM me your e-mail.

You DO NOT need to eat meat. I wouldn't discourage you from including some fish like tuna or salmon in your diet (I'm actually pescatarian rather than true vegetarian because I do eat fish a few times per year), but there is no need whatsoever to consume meat. Yes, it has lots of protein, but it is also packed with tons of cholesterol and saturated fats. If you stick with with fish, eggs, and cheese you'll get all that you need. And you CAN make big gains without the fish if you so desire.
