Unwanted bad advice!

I'm just venting but some stupid fools at the gym can really piss me off! I'm a stickler for good form. To me, form supercedes weight and I live by that rule.

I just completed a 505lb squat (not my max), ass to the floor, back straight as straight can be, when some dick decides to come over and give me some 'expert advice' on what I should and shouldn't be doing.

Asshole tells me,
"I shouldnt' squat anything over 405 unnless I'm using a smith machine." A SMITH MACHINE! IS THIS GUY A FUCKING PANSY OR WHAT?!?! He also says, "Squats fucked his knees up and if I don't heed his advice, mine knees are gonna get fucked up, too."

So, I try to be nice and I thank him for his input instead of telling him what a fool he is for pushing his homemade knowledge of squatting down my throat. Then I proceed to do deadlifts. I'm kind of pissed which may have led to my PR of a 545lb deadlift (conventional style). GUESS WHAT?!?! Here comes the idiot with some more advice!

He tells me my ass is too low off the start and that if I want real power then I need to switch to sumo style. I've trained both ways and conventional works better for me. Then the fucker asks me how much I bench. I didn't tell him and didn't even want to talk about it because he was probably ready to ram some more of his "professional knowledge" down my throat. It really took a lot of self-control to not say to the guy, "SHUT THE FUCK UP! I NEVER ASKED YOU IN THE FIRST PLACE!"

BTW, this guy was twice my size (I'm 177lbs) and half my strength. He wont even look at me now because he sees I haven't incorporated any of his advice into my workout. What a dick! Just had to vent a little bit.

Watch out for the next time he is benching. Spotting him will allow you the opportunity to ensure a 'lifting accident' takes place.

Remember, numerous studies have shown that recreational weightlifting is far more hazardous than powerlifting and Olympic lifting. With the statistics on your side, where can you go wrong?

:)

you know what the solution is for this problem don't you?

get bigger. once you are over 250lbs (and not fat) , the unwanted advice mysteriously disappears.

train hard. grow. enjoy the benefits.

:D :D :D

250lb is something I dont think I'll ever see in my lifetime. After training for almost 18 yrs. I was able to reach 194lbs at best (with gear) 154lbs is my natural top body weight.

I may have to just go with the 'lifting accident' option instead.

LOL!! I agree with Irish. I cant rememebr the last time i got unwanted advice from strangers.

If someone tells you shit advice and their wrong , dude correct them. Stand up for what you know is true. Maybe you will change his mind. Tell him 500 squat to you IS like a405 to him. Explain that your body IS stronger and you can lift that way.

Why is it ok to do 10 reps with 250lbs on the bench? To people thats safe weight , your flushing blood and Blah , blah . BUt too much heavy benching isnt good. But i put the same effort into benching 405 as lifter X does into 250. Should i not do it. We put forth the same effort. I can squat 500 naked with no gear. Should i do it on the smith becasue some fool says its too heavy ....For him? I am just explaining an arguement you can present to someone like him next time. You see my point right? There is no such thing as "safe weight". Maybe to you but not me, and certainly not Gary Frank!!

Its the same as an even bigger fool telling that guy he should not squat over 315 , except on a smith, cuase 405 hurt his little knees!!

I get this every day.

esp. with deadlifts...

usually 'get DOWN lower.. push the weight up dont pull it!'

(although I dont believe in that, I use just enough knee bend to get down to the bar with a decent arch..)

first off. Those are some imrpessive lifts for someone your size... i'd love to have those.

Also, you said your top natural body weight was 154.... how tall are you?

I like the lifting accident idea. You really should just stand up to him, correct his shitty advice, and continue lifting.

i used to get "DO NOT HOLD YOUR BREATH WHILE LIFTING." ..... uhhh... it's really difficult to breathe while you have what feels like 9999999999999999999999 lbs loaded on the bar without having your body move and end up falling or moving some way ultimately placing u out of your groove.

I'm 5'7" (177lbs at the moment)

I normally would have said something but I really couldn't tell where this guy was coming from. Was he sincere or was he trying to impress his buddy by sounding like he knew what he was talking about? I wasn't sure and I didn't have time to jaw-jack at the moment. But I do know one thing...he leaves me alone now that he sees I don't heed his advice and that is good enough for me.:)
