To Many Protein shakes?????

BJA

New member
Is there any harm in eating 3-4 shakes a day along with 1-2 meat meals?? It is hard and alot of work to keep cooking all day long. Shakes are nice and easy and gets the protein in quick. Also trying to keep the carbs to a min. and my protein powder is very low (2 grms.) so... Any Comments??

there are other ways then just cooking, nuts and tuna come to mind. If you want mass to have to eat, there no getting around it!

That's along side of protein drinks.

About a year or so ago, there was a posting on here by a member (can't remember his name) but he was taking in 5-6 protein shakes per day in addition to 2 meals consisting of fish (canned tuna I think) and rice. He did this for about three months, made great gains in addition to lower bodyfat levels, but when he went to the doctor for bloodwork before starting his cycle, the blood work showed some major trouble going on with this type of diet. I can not remember what exactly was found, but he was very very borderline of developing severe health problems. Maybe some mod or vet will remember more of this and find the post. It was a very detailed and interesting read.

Make sure you are taking a good multivit daily to help round off what you may be missing.

tr yto get most of your protein from real foods if you can,the shakes are convienant but that's it.sometimes people expect too much from the shakes.i know it's a pain in the ass,but you can still eat pretty clean and eat loads of protein.........

Remember that your body can't absorb more than 50g of liquid protein at once. So don't eat like a steak with like 30-40 gms of protein, and then drink a shake of 50gms of protein. As long as you get 40-50gms of protein 5-6 times a day, you'll be ok. I drink 3 shakes a day, the other i get from food

There is no set amount that your body can or can't digest. I myself take in 3 shakes a day and 1 MRP and get the rest from whole foods. I never take just a shake for a meal except right before bed. I always have some form of whole food everytime I eat. Do what works best for you

I gotta go with M18 here. With his marvelous suggestion of adding ginger root, I think this may help with protein absorption/digestion. If everyone reacted the same way, there would only be one training/diet program for us to follow. But since we dont it's all about Mix n' match.

M18 if your talking about how much your body can absorb as a whole in ONE day then your right. But the body can only take so much protein at a time.. 50g whey protein is about the limit.

Also BJA just alike The Mann said get most of your protein from foods. You'll see better results from food protein (chicken, steak) then you will from shakes all day.

Where did you get that info ? I am sure some people can digest more then 50g's at once siyting and I am sure there are people who can't even digest that much. Everyone is diffrent so there is no set limit

I work at a gym with a number of CPT's.. college degree quality. I also talk to many people in the supplement industry all the time..
and have read many articles :D

and my doctor told me ..

One way to look at it is if you do a really intense work out then your body is going to be craving protein and you can down 60g whey very easily. But in general you can't just have 100g protein mid-morning and expect your body to take it all in.. even after a workout that would be alot. It goes to waste.

That is true....you can't just down 100grams and expect to digest it all but no matter how many doctors or people in general you talk to, you can't set a specific limit on the amount of protein that one can digest at a time. There are factors to put into consideration

i've give you that.. there are alot of factors..i can't prove you wrong because i don't have the technical information :D

I'm in the 3 meals/3 shakes + snacks group. I like to munch on nuts between real meals. I understand your desire to cut back on carbs but keep in mind that carbs are required to properly break down protein. I think you'd be a lot better of with an MRP rather than a strictly protein shake.

yeah you won't digest it all.. but where is it gonna go? no where.. it's gonna sit in your stomach until you can digest it.. so I dont' see the problem of eatting 100 g of protein at a sitting..

Thanks for all the reply's....I bought some ginger root today...what is a good dosage of that to use when eating???

Thanks guys

I totally agree with Mustang_18 on this one. I think it is a bunch of crap when people say "your body can only use 50G of protein at a time." Where the fuck do people get these numbers.

They hear about it some place, it sticks in their head and then they repeat it. I have a degree in biology and one in biochemistry and I never heard anything like that! I even did my independant research on muscle tissue!

It's the same stupid people that say that red meat take weeks even months before it makes it through the body! BULLSHIT. If that was case I would gain 7 pounds a week. (I eat about a pound a day!)

My point is, don't go throwing numbers around like it is the gospel unless you know what your taking about and have the scientific to back it up.
