I haven't seen anyone here mentioning cardio for anaerobic conditioning. This comes from doing HIIT (high intensity interval training). There are different ways to do this, but they all boil down to intervals of anaerobic activity, such as sprinting, separated with lower intensity recovery intervals.
I find that I get more out of my heavy workouts since I began this -- I'm able to maintain the intense energy of a heavy set better. I don't do HIIT to burn calories, although it's supposed to be good at elevating metabolic rates for a long time afterwords.
