The idea is that all sacrifice is not always worth it.

I've seen people give up alot to save a family member. Usually this is an older person who can't take care of themselves. The addition of that old person puts a strain on the household. In the end, that strain (in two cases) broke the family and they split apart. That addition cost three children a nuclear family because one parent thought that taking care of that addition was more important then her own. She felt obligated. IMHO, that was stupid.

If she (the person you were watching) truely cares and the family can survive the additions, then great! If not, then the best thing would be to let the father and brother go somewhere else. An old folks home. A group home. Whatever. Take them to a field and tell them about rabbits.
