I don't know about syrups. The rice vinegar does have some sugar in it but not that much. You can make your own with vinegar, and about a tblsp. of sugar and some other non-worrisome ingredients. Since I usually used the powder and bottled rice vinegar, I haven't made it in a while. However, I would not sweat it. The sugar is minimal, and is likely outweighed by the benefit of eating raw fish, etc.
