Stallone rips Batman a new one, praises Ahnold

I think the TV shows that are focused on action (Lost, Rome, Deadwood, Jericho, 24, The Wire, Sopranos, etc.) are also pulling away from the main action movies.

People are getting more into the TV series because they can buy entire series or download them and watch them back to back. A 13 hour movie.

All built up suspense style. Definitely has my attention more than a random action movie these days.

I had such high hopes for the rock, stone cold too. Unfortunately hollywood has elbowed guys like that out of the market for top of the line productions. If you don't get on your knees and suck a little dick you can forget it...you're not getting the high budget parts. It's so cringy for me when I hear about them kicking around movie scripts for video games like Halo or Gears of war. It's like really, you're going to try to make gears of war with the current crop of crap? Hollywood hasn't cultivated ANY real action heroes and then all of a sudden when they need real dudes they don't have em so they make a movie like predators with adrien fucking brody. Assinine. I cannot wait for the dawn of the 20k movies shot on $200 equipment that will compete with 100m epic hollywood fails. If you don't beleive that's coming....do yourself a favor and google the half life and modern warfare live action shorts. They are magnificent.
LOL @ stone cold. he makes stallone look like morgan freeman.

all the shows you listed off were for the most part successful because they had little known actors or character actors. none of those would've had the success if they had big stars. the wire was one of my favorite shows, and it was mainly because of how "real" it seemed, and because it didn't have A-list celebs clogging it up.

physical strength is becoming obsolete in today's society and i think current movies are reflecting that

Can't go backwards, nor would I want to. I love my 80s classic flicks, but they have their place. I think physicality and looking the part is important, and in that respect, Keaton (just as an example) was a fail. It wasn't easy to see a mostly-comedic actor in that role, but he wasn't bad either. On the other hand, I don't think there's a single jacked 80s action hero that would have looked anything but silly in the role of Batman. It would be impossible to take the likes of a Stallone or Schwarzenegger seriously in any of those roles, I think.

These movies are all over-the-top in some way, but today's Batman or Superman flicks have more credibility with a guy who is in good shape and can also act, as opposed to a muscle man with a larger-than-life personality. In many cases, that would only be a distraction.

The Rock, or should I say Duane Johnson now, still has potential and possibly remains as an exception (imo), despite the silly kiddy stuff he's done.

Nowdays when I see action films I liked 20-30 years ago they only make me laugh. They're so stupid and full of bad acting.

casino royale is a good example of the cerebral shift. in previous bond movies, james bond is portrayed as a jet setting super spy with an irresistible sexual magnetism. he is a mans man personified.
in casino royale, he is framed in a more psychological sense, a more authentic sense. he is not romanticized as a female slaying sophisticated uber male, but rather he is a confused sociopath with
with a mercurial personal code. the latter representation is infinitely closer to the truth than the former. after all, he would have to be a killer without the pesky problem of dealing with a conscience.
he would also spend most of his time with an assumed identity. perfect job for the chameleon like personality of the psychopath.

i love my old skool action flicks but i dig the honesty and closer to reality aspect of this new genre.
