Did a bad turn skiing in December & it still hurts. Might not be serious, but I'm having pain.....

Looking thru the phone book, now I'm unsure whether or not to see a Sports Med. Dr. or an Orthopedic Surgeon....

Suggestions??

describe the injury

I borrowed a pair of demo skis and was going down a Black Diamond I had done the day before and fell, I think twisting my right knee.

Now, if I sit too long & stand up, putting weight on it hurts, then it's stiff & I limp for a while before it "warms up." After I get going, I'm OK, but then when I'm done exercising it hurts. If I turn my knee at all it hurts. If it's bent too long or straight too long, it hurts. And it hurts along the sides of my knee, not in the front behind the kneecap (my left one hurts in that manner from Spinning Class a few years ago).

I don't know if I should stop doing legs for a while or not either....

I would go to a general doctor and get him to set up an MRI initially

Well, couldn't a sports Dr. do the same thing? The co pay is the same & I can see whoever I want without a referral. My family dr. doesn't see "accidents."

See a sports med MD, he can order an MRI and/or he can refer you onto a physio or athletic therapist for some treatment. Does the knee ever feel unstable or that it locks?

When I first stand up, it feels weak & I can't put my weight on it fully. I have to stand up and gradually add weight to my right leg in order to be able to walk on it.

Got an appt for 1:00 pm this Friday!! Plus it's in the same complex as my eye dr. so I can look at new glasses.....

sounds like a minor MCL tear. If so , it'll heal on it's own in about 8 weeks. I had the same symptoms and that's what it was. I don't think it's the meniscus by what you describe, if it was I don't think you'd be able to walk without being in serious pain.

An MRI will show exactly what it is though.
I hope you feel better soon!
