What did the peeps in China thing about the situation in Japan?

The official press didn't seem to think the disaster would affect them directly, but they definitely covered the story closely. The state-run media did describe it in incredibly dramatic terms (i.e. as the worst disaster in Japan since WWII). The people we met with directly didn't seem to care at all.

The most interesting news articles were on our debt. There were two overarching themes: 1) They had to diversify their holdings (buy more yen and euros) and 2) They haven't adequately factored-in the hidden costs of lending to the US (setting themselves up to raise our interest rates).

Here's a sample online version (I didn't find this specific one until I returned home).

Steer clear of US debt, expert warns

The other really interesting themes in state-run media were:

1) The government patting itself on the back for growth. They were always firing-off numbers that describe how well they were doing -- and they were highly specific (i.e. plants, projects, revenues, profits). It had a very analytical spin on it was well. They are very numbers-oriented.

2) The government patting itself on the back for catching someone who was doing the people harm. There were scandals in areas like feeding clenbuterol to pigs plastered all over the papers. There was a clear message that the government was the only thing stopping all these evil doers from completely ravaging the people.
