Smith Machine

Well, some of you won't believe this but I have a back defect that makes it very dangerous for me to do free squats.

I've reinjured my back and been laid up every time I've tried to do free squats beyond light weight.

Sometimes when you have a permanent physical problem, you learn by trial and error that you just have to listen to your body. How many times are you going to touch a hot stove before you realize that it burns you bad every time you touch it?

Thank god I finally discovered that I am able to squat on the smith machine, so for me it is the best piece of equipment in the gym. Something about the stability. I wish I could get that on the free squat, but again, that fuckin stove is hot!

I bought an Ironmaster a few years ago..
(basically a Smith with saftey stops and lockouts), because I often work out alone. They let you go to max without worrying about wether or not to try an get that last rep in...
love it

All we have at my gym are angled.

Smith machines generally a joke stay away from them except of the most extreme situations.

Cmon genarr, you didn't mean that did you?:D I never really used them that much until recently. Tried incline bench, behind the neck press, shrugs, stiff legged deadlifts, and bent rows. I usually use free weights with these but was surprised at how much my muscles were isolated with the smith machine. Especially the stiff legged deadlifts, I use them for lower back more than for hamstrings and using the machine really isolated and fatigued it. Of course nothing will replace heavy as hell compound movements:devil:

You guys still didnt answer my question??/ Some of you said that you have the angled and the straight, does it hit muscle groups at a different angle/?/ I only use it for some legs and shrugs

The angled one is only slightly offset from the normal one, I think it's really supposed to be a little more of a natural movement than a 90 degree bench. Depending on the exercise, I would basically use both. You are the only one who knows which is better for you. You can only be the judge, bro!

Due to a recurring shoulder problem I cant do free squats.I use the Smith machine for squats. Its not as effective as free squats and like Muscleup said, it can take a toll on your knees if not done properly.

I use mine on days I don't have a spot for my bench. I don't know if I could do behind the head military presses without it. I also use it for bent knee good mornings.

Well i think the Smith machine is a good peice of equipment and very good for shrugs and actually doing chest once your pre-exhausted and many other excercises, but for me I can't do squats on it but everybody ROM is a little different, so what works for some may noy work for others ...you know how it goes:D

I love smith machines. I mass bulid triceps on them. I use em for heavy upright rows. I also use em every so often for military and flat bench for change ups. Nothin wrong with a smith machine. It has its uses.
