Should i become a Dietition/Nutritionist? ANY On this BOARD?

I recently lost a ton of weight and i am really into it now. Im currently working, 19. I know i need to go to college, so i have been interested in either Criminal Justice and or Nutritionist/Dietition.

I would love helping out tacking obesity, obesity is a huge problem and i feel i would be able to open up my own Place in the future. Maybe a nutrional center /gym.

I just dont know where to get started. There are a ton of phony online schools, i would love to go online but in this area there arent too many that are acutally creditable.

Are there any dietitions/nutrionists on the board that can shed some light on the field?
Salery? Hard work?(wich i wouldntmind)

how hard was it getting where u are?
how long did it take?
how many years school or internships, etc.

I really feel this is the field i am going to choose. Im just aksing because i dont have alot of money, im working full time, so i cant just take a risk on a course and then say "fuck it"

Thanks for anyone that can help.

That's exactly what I wanted to do when I was in college. (Somehow I ended up going to grad school for I.O. Psychology and now work in a completely unrelated field. LOL) Here's some info on it though:

If I could go back, I probably would've gotten my major in something that I truly enjoyed (nutrition, exercise physiology) rather than working for a higher paycheck....I still have the rest of my 20's though. Maybe a celebrity will come along and hire me as a personal trainer for a $1000 an hour. :)

Are you good at it? Do you feel passionate about it?

Mine gets $95 a visit which is roughly 30-45 minutes.
She is booked solid 4-6 weeks in advance and has a background in Kinesiology Wholistic health as well and is constantly educating herself.
She is amazing.

yea im definatley interested and very passionate, im writing a book about my weight loss and how to do it etc, on my free time now, im prob not even going to sell it just try to get donations for it lmao.

but seriously, i really would love to wage a war on obesity, I HAVE been plagued by obesity my whole life, everyone is big in my family except my mother and I so it is a big deal in my life. I know ALOT ALOT about it as well, im consitantly reading things on how/why things react in our bodies. its acutally amazing i find it. i have also "coached" several coworkers through thier weight loss, got one down 20 lbs and another down 15. Not too bad. AND I LOVE HELPING PEOPLE GET THINNER/FEEL BETTER about themselves, cause man i went from a fat to fab and im conincieded as hell, i dont know what i would feel like, most likely exremely depressed if i was still "trapped".

Thanks guys!

I thought I/O Psychology was really interesting and loved all my psych classes. My undergraduate advisor told me college was more like an "audition" for grad school, so I went ahead and got my M.A. in that. It only took another year and a half, a few classes per week, sometimes only one or two major papers per semester, so it's really not that bad. After graduation, though, there was really nothing out there for entry level jobs. Everything required 3-5 years prior experience which I didn't have. (Kind of a catch-22 really) I'd definitely recommend start looking for an internship as soon as possible, probably sophomore or junior year of college so you have the experience and the degree once you're out. After all that schooling I'm now in commercial real estate planning that I happened to get into from a relative. I'm constantly on the look out for anything in H.R./IO Psychology that pays well and doesn't require 10 years experience or slow increases in pay. From what I've heard, in this field it's more important "who you know" and being at the right place and time than actual knowlege of the subject.

Salaries are great though, my uncle was director of Human Resources at a rifle company that just went out of business, and he got close to $100,000 a year.

Obviously people in the U.S.A are not small by human standards, but some brand new research in the U.K shows 75% of the population to be 'Obese'. Why not study here?

Try calling or even stopping by a nutritionist's office in person and tell them that this is what you are interested in and if it's possible for you to arrange a day to sit in and take notes on what his day is like. If one of them says no, try another, you'll eventually find one that takes an interest in you. If you're aggressive without being too "pushy" you'll get whatever you want.
