Shady schools make big bank in recession

id put the number of parents who work 1/4 of as hard as teachers at below 50%.

I'm all for busting mom and dad too. We can agree on that point.

measure teachers through what, standardized tests? so special education students and students that dont give a shit about school or the test which drag down the scores are a reflection of the teachers? for someone involved in education, you dont sound like you know much of what is going on in elementary and middle schools.

That's the old special education argument. How hard is it to carve-out the small percentage of students and teachers involved in special education and treat them separately?

tests scores arent a reflection of teachers. graduation rates arent a reflection of teachers. time to take the thumb out of the kids asses and make them responsible for their own success.

That's why you need to do pre and post-course testing. It's not hard. Then you know what you are starting with and you know what you've finished with.

this country is creating a bunch of ignorant finger pointers (starting with mommy and daddy in the house pointing fingers at everyone but themselves) who cant take responsibility for anything. you wanna finger point, and thats what youre doing, start with the parents. its their kids that fail, not the teachers. if the teachers took thetests, theyd all pass with flying colors.

I'm fine with calling-out parents, but anyone who argues their job shouldn't be measured should never complain about what it's worth. If you can't be measured, then you can't be valued either.

Reading plunkey's sig in this thread gives me lols.

I knew that was meant to be my sig from the first moment I saw it.

I believe my thread response was: "I have found my signature".

nclb has put these people and students on the same playing field as honors students. its completely unfair to both parties. portfolio assessments should do for these kids. most wont be able to make it in college anyway.

i completely agree except joe taxpayer is too stupid to realize the purpose and benefits of data driven curriculum. this type of assessment wouldnt be cheap and all the taxpayers would bitch bitch bitch, but never once make their kids do work.

i totally agree. all teachers should be assessed honestly and fairly. but if tenure is removed, salaries should be increased markedly. part of the job is the security. thats why people make the salary sacrifice. more stringent policing is definately necessary though. i do agree and so does my wife. i will say though, my wifes district denied step increases last year to tenured teachers with poor reviews. that is a step in the right direction.

in bold.

good argument and points from both sides

lol@ all the private sector dutchbags pulling in over 100K

i dunno. . .my wife teaches middle school math and reading. . .in her former life, she was an executive for fed ex and on track to be their next female v.p. (there was only one other one at the time). . .when we had our twins, she stepped back for a few years, and during the last couple of years of her motherhood hiatus, she took a couple of classes a semester at a pitt branch campus and got her teaching certificate. . .her compensation now is about one-third of what she made at fed ex, but she's very happy and feels like she is adequately compensated for the job that she does. . .plus, her health insurance, retirement, and other benefits are pretty dang good. . .it was a great move for us. . .maybe not from a purely financial perspective, but she's a mommy now. . .and a damn good one. . .our kids are awesome, because of her.
