Salmon in a can. Comparable to fresh fillet?

For the sake of convienience (and possibly money) is salmon in a can just about as good as fresh salmon?

I can see the obvious difference that the canned stuff will have more sodium and a bit of mercury.

But in terms of EFA's for example, or anything else that you guys think should matter, how does salmon in a can stack up?

what kind of canned salmon? some canned goods are so processed that there is very little, if any, nutrients or natural ingredients left. I suggest you stick to fresh salmon.

What are your thoughts on canned tuna?

If nothing else, is it worth it for the protein?

If you're getting organic canned tuna with low-sodium (sea salt based) and draining the water, then it's a feasible product. Otherwise, the sodium, preservatives and other 'mixed in' products make canned tuna a bad choice.

Ok, good points. I will look into that. Thanks!

I know off hand that it is the tuna in water (not oil)... and I always drain the crap out of it, so it's dry as a bone.

What about 'Starkist Chunk Light Tuna in Water' in the "Flavor Fresh Pouch"??

Its the only tuna I eat, unless its a grilled tuna steak. These are always on sale at the grocery store or even Target for around $1.25 a pouch. Sometimes even as low as $1.00 each.

Here's the nutrition info:

A lot of times the "natural and artificial" ingredients are not listed. Do you have access to canned tuna with sea salt ? see if you can find it.
