Sales People Party Tits..No Doubt!!

nitlyan

New member
If everyone was paid the exact same salary, what position in your company would you want??

I can't believe anyone would NOT say sales. Here is why..

1. Freedom...out of the office,
2. Phat lunches and dinners with clients on the company dime! While you geeks are stuck behind your desks where you belong.
3. Lifting if an appointment gets canceled...no one knows but you and the geeks are stuck in the office and can't leave! haha
4. Crazy parties you get invited to because you know every CEO< CIO, CFO, VP in town!!! Office jockeys do not..
5. Never fear of a layoff..due to the UP and UPs you personally know from above #4.
6. Win company trips for selling....due to your skills at handshakes, drinking, smiling, and whifing that line of Hooty in the bathroom with the right VP! haha
7. When it's 4 o'clock and you are watching the clock from behind your desk..I am at the bar having a cocktail with another Executive from a competitor exchanging cards and watching the afternoon ball game...HAHAHAHA

................SUCKERS......................................:D

Yea...sales was cool for several years. Glad you like it. I hate telemarketers though. Nothing happens until something is sold.

Telemarketers????????????????????????What the fuck is that???????????? That's not sales, that's a desk jockey bothering some poor bastard without an appointment.

if everyone was paid the same in that company i would find a different company to work for. im better than anyone else in a company and if i am not compensated for my genius i will not work there.

Money..it was just a scenario for God's sake. Lighten up bud. Well I run my own deal so it wouldn't matter to me anyway....You don't get rich working for someone else!!!!!!!!!!! But, if I had to go work for someone else again I would definitely be in Sales again.........PARTY!

Ahhhhh sales....I remember it well. Lot's of netwoking and fucking around, and very little in the way of actual "work." I enjoyed the hell out of it. :D Not everyone is cut out for it though. There is a lot of bullshit involved, and you have to outgoing and friendly (or like in my case, fake it).

What kind of sales are you in nitlyan? I did some financial services stuff for a year or so, but quit to go back to school...big mistake there. I'd love to get back into in though, maybe do it for the government or something..

t.

I run my own Network Solutions company, but I essentially sell Telecom Services to Fortune 100 businesses. You know..DS1 to OC-n....the shit that connects GEORGE to all of us....It is pretty cool. Geeks keep making new services that are cheaper, like every year, so I sell the same company over and over and over again..Thanks geeks for the easiest sale ever!

What kind of experience do your sales reps have, or is it just you? I always figured sales in the IT industry would be pretty sweet...

Telecom sales is not the place to be now....neither is network services.

I think you're probably full of shit, and you're just fired up because you were able to close your first decent sale in the past three months. Congrats.

Sales = corporate whores.

Peace

yeah can i please be a salesman? pretty much every salesman i have ever met in my life has been a tool. first off, your job consists of 90% brown nosing to your customers. i was not born to kiss anyone's ass. you promise a whole bunch of shit you can't deliver so you can make a buck and that's why you need techies/sales engineers watching your back to stop you from lying. wherever you go, even when you're not a work, you're always trying to sell something...be it selling yourself or whatever. these are probably some of the most annoying folks on the planet. they can never seem to get out of salesman mode when they're not working and out on a social level. i rank salesmen right up there with lawyers on the respect ladder.

Everyone is a salesman. I don't give a shit what line of work you are in you are selling something. Want your girlfriend to give you a hummer at the theater and she doesn't want to but you get her to. Guess what you sold her.

"you promise a whole bunch of shit you can't deliver so you can make a buck and that's why you need techies/sales engineers watching your back to stop you from lying. " Dude there are a lot of different sales job than just techie and engineering products.

"Sales = corporate whores" Didn't you just land a big ass account for your manuals? Let's see you had to "sell" them didn't you?

Selling something I created is a whole different ballgame than selling products for a corporation.

Widgets anyone?

Oh ok. What if you are an independant contractor and sell for many different companies? Whore or ok guy?

Well If I dont make Military or Federal Service my lifes work then Sales will be where I go. I've watched my uncle very good for himself in Sales. He's worked for Just about Every major Telecom company in this country. AT&T, Sprint, MCI...At one point in the Early 90's he was playing Golf 3 times a week, Going to 3 Sport events a week and Was at the Final 4 the 2 years Arkansas was kicking ass. Now he Flys to London 1 a month for Business meetings mostly playing Golf in Scotland at one of the British open courses...Not to shabby I think.

He's gone to Every continent except for that giant ice cap down south and experienced a few cultures in his time. I guess it would all depend on your personality and what you want to do with yourself...That sounds like a blast to me

Did my time in sales (7 years), was successful. Got to a point where I didn't want to make the sacrifices need to be successful at sales. I enjoy not having to attend stupid client functions. I enjoy not having to put pressure on people. I enjoy knowing that when 5:00 comes, I can go home and not think about my job anymore. I enjoy my time being my time -- no weekend or evening appointments. I never have to miss time with my wife or kids to go hobnob with some clueless fucks. No getting pissed on by the client. No having to explain and attempt to implement impossible deadlines on my coworkers. I enjoy knowing exactly how much my paycheck is going to be. And I don't care about rec drugs or boozing it up when I could be doing something with my family, so that's not a plus.

There are some cool aspects to sales, but for me, there were more cons than pros for where I'm at in life right now.

Seems like many of you have a negative attitude when it comes to sales and people that are involved in sales for a living. You all need to wake up and realize that without someone selling your product or service many of you would not have a job. Another misconception is that we are corporate whores as you put it, i guess that depends on what field you happen to be in, I am lucky enough that I dont answer to anyone but myself. Actually though someone slaving away fearful about getting fired every day would probably be more of a corporate whore wouldn't you think? My point is dont always put down what those of us in sales do, it is probably much more work and effort than most of your jobs. And by the way it pays pretty well if you are good and work hard at it.

All of your reasons to not be a salesman are the reasons that I am....... I work when I want and make what I earn. I am home every night and weekend unless I choose not to be. I coach my oldest son's baseball team and assist on my youngest son's t-ball team....... along with playing softball 2 nights a week and tourney's on the weekends. Depends on what line of sales you are in.

Exactly!! Top 5% of the nations wealthiest are in sales of some type.

The top 5% wealthiest americans started their own successful businesses, like Bill Gates or the family owners of Wal-Mart. Of course sales were involved, but they are in almost any business endeavor; but I would not call these people salesman in the sense you guys are talking about it here. They are innovators. Where do you get your stats rudedawg...

You're an OK guy anyway. :-)

The earning potential in ANY enterprise (sales or anything else) is capped at whatever you want it to be and can make it be. For a lot of people, that's pretty low.

Many salespeople can actually do better with the structure that sales life gives them. In that context, they are OK. Outside of it, they're screwed.

You know I am right.

This is misinformation.

An annual income of $130,000 places you in the top 4% of earners nationwide. An annual income of $319,000 places you in the top 1%, though the average for the top 1% is $915,000.

Generally, the wealthiest people in the country are corporate founders. Gates, Ellison, Dell, Redstone, Siebel, the Waltons - those are the names we all know, but there are hundreds of others we never know of.

Labeling these people as salesmen is incongruous. Those of you that align them with what you are doing, are fooling yourselves, unless you too have founded something.

You have zero clue! Telecom is hot as hell. With technology moving quickly towards IP based communication I once again will have another product to sell at a cheaper price with better scalability and loads easier to mange in-house. Check out these companies MTS! yipes.com, savvis.net, talkingnets.com, and so on. No, I have been in telecom sales for over 7 years now. look at this company MTS, you jealous fool, www.usoncology.com, they have the largest data network in the healthcare arena and I sell them every single circuit. Most of their network is Frame and OC connections. Guess what, when IP based communication gets out of Beta tests and Fortune 500 start to implementing, you better believe I will have a ton of business to sell. Rip out your routers and CSU/DSU's lay off 2-3 geeks in IT at every location who manage the WAN, you will only need one now, save your busines 50-80% in circuit cost. SO eat me asshole and don't speak unless you are educated on the subject. Now get back behind your desk and work. HAHAHAA

Nitlyan,

I know at least as much about telecom sales as you do, if not more. Been down that road. I know the tech side of it too.

If you care - I'm fully self-employed now. I do work crazy hours, but when I sell something, it has my name on it. Can you say the same thing?

You could not accomplish this in 100 lifetimes. You need the structure of sales.

Peace.

I to sell my brain power. When my invoices go out with my name on it it feels great. MTS!

I know the tech side too. Sold hardware and software for the world's largest direct supplier. 2 years of that shit. Then found the real money. Sorry you couldn't hack the corporate sales field...I stole a few clients from my mighty company who used to employ me. Now I sell my own services...resell and consulting work. What is your hourly rate? Mine is $85/hr...plus the commissions. Don't try and belittle me MTS. It seems you have a beef with sales people. I guess you couldn't meet quota and got canned! Sorry bro..better luck next time. Good luck with your venture. I seriously hope you get to make some coin for yourself. It feels GREAT!

I never did sales. I bought a lot of shit as an IT manager.

My beef with the profession of sales is that you rarely learn other aspects of business.

I'm not going to get into a pissing contest. I just signed a six figure book deal, I am negotiating contracts with two of the largest netowrk hardware comapnies to develop a journal and attend conferences for them, and I have close to signing a deal to provide educational materials for several school districts.

I sell my ass off. But always my own shit. My admin assistants combined make $85 per hour. Interesting.

Well thanks.... I always wondered if I was a whore though.

Not sure I follow you with the earning potential statement. If you are salaried or hourly you are screwed in my opinion. Yes you can climb the corporate ladder but how long will it take and what happens when you reach the top rung? You are still going to be capped at whatever the boss wants to pay you. With sales their is no limit. You make what you earn. You sell 1000 whatevers you make whatever the commission is for them. If you only sell 250 you earned what you made. You could be a real go getter or have a great week/month/quarter and sell 1 million of them. If you work for ABC company and are salaried or hourly and bring in 10,000 new clients, stores, people, whatever you still make what the boss pays you unless of course a bonus pops up. In the same time frame if you only bring in 250 clients, stores, people, etc.... you still make whatever the boss pays you.

I know the structure that the sales life has given me the past 7 years there is no way in hell I would want to punch a time clock or have someone tell me when and where to be. Now there are many that can't work in this enviroment because they lack discipline, self confidence, etc....

That's why 80% sell 20% of the business and 20% sell 80% of the business. And that is why I enjoy going on all the trips that those 80% don't get to go on.

I'd consider sales again if there really are sales positions as you describe rudedawg.

Question, do you have to develop business in your line of sales? Cold-calling, referrals, etc... Or does the business come to you (or is it presold by another and you are more or less an AE)?

Your secretaries make $42.50/hr?????? I call bullshit. That's all I have to say. Post your deal on the board...let's see the contract?:) I do six figure deals while talking on my cell in the bathroom. You don't impress me, son.

It's all a lot of networking. Cold calls are worthless. You need to figure out the art of networking with the right people. Charity events. Certain ground breaking ceremonies for some new company, etc...It is an art and once you profect it money is easy as pie to make. Seriously. And it's fun as hell to do.

There are four of them, and they often travel. They are true Admin assistants. Any family members need a job?

You do six figure deals with other people's shit. Big deal. If you weren't, SOMEONE ELSE WOULD. There are hundreds, maybe thousands, of people selling circuits and making money.

I create, market, and sell my own shit. You're a good salesman. I am a creator and innovator. Therein lies the difference. (Plus you're a typical sales asshole).

Peace

MTS, you still don't get it. Did I stutter. I own my own telecom consulting company. I analyse WAN's for large businesses. They pay me $85 an hour to give them my opinion and input. I bill over 300 hours a month. Do the math. PEACE.......I sell my own shit! Get it. Maybe the circuits I suggest are someone elses, but it is my company and my idea. All of my clients save thousands a month at each location after I consult them. They love me!! Sorry you have a bad taste in your mouth about salespeople. Did a salesman gouge you for his highest price. PROBABLY!

Hook me up!! I feel like a peon making alot less than $42.00/hr.

I guess that University Degree didn't do shit for me :-(

I haven't ever cold called and never will. All of my business is from leads or referrals. Referrals call me...... I either e-mail the leads or call them. I buy the leads from a source. So they are not "mine" I mean in Matt's definition I didn't manufacture them. LMAO

The business comes to me or I go to it but I don't go unless I know for a fact that they are giving me a check. I also hav e agents that write for me so I get an override on their business.

In the insurance market it is very competitive.....you either lead or die......or get by miserably. I am damn good a t what I do and I busted my ass for 5 years to get to where I am at now. And with the products I market I can sleep at night knowing I am not fucking my clients over to make a buck.

Interesting thread....good points on both sides, but before everyone gets all excited and thinks they are going to get rich in sales remember that for every nitlyan there are a hundred salesmen who are just scraping by. It takes a certain kind of personality to be really good at sales, but if you have the nack there is definately great income potential. Unfortuanately, I'm not really a "chummy, buddy-buddy" kind of guy so sales is not my thing.
