Rest Intervals

Just curious, how long do people rest between sets? When I'm doing sets to failure of 1-7 reps I rest 4 minutes between sets, when I do sets with 8-12 reps I rest 3 minutes between sets. Yet everyone else I know is always talking about resting 30-60 seconds between sets. That just never seemed right to me, particularly if you're using heavy weights and going to failure.

That depends what you're training for. If you just want size, rest as long as it takes for you to be able to perform your desired number of reps. Shorter rest periods are usually for ...well, conditioning I think. What ARE shorter rest periods for?

In my opinion, shorter rest periods are for people who like to do 5 sets per exercise, for 15-20 reps (nowhere near failure), using light weights, to get "pumped up". But that's just my opinion. :)

I take as long a rest I need, until I feel I can hit the weights up with maximum intensity again. Some lifts I need a much longer rest period then others (ie. Deadlifts), but overall I always go by feel. I couldnt imagine doing the 5x5 on deads/squats hell any compound lift for that matter and only resting 30sec between each set!:eek2:
