Rep range and hypertrophy

Well this kept me confused for a while..I've been working out till present as a bodybuilder but then I considered powerlifting as many successful bodybuilders were once a powerlifter like Arnold.
I was wondering what if I mix powerlifting and bodybuilding at the same time would I benefit from it ?
And concerning rep range I was doing e.g 4x10-12 of BB curls then I switched to 8x5reps (I could curl way heavier weight than usual) and surprisingly I saw significant changes what is the explanation behind that.
Thanks in advance brothers

From what I have heard and in my experience rep range of 3-5 seems to be better for adding strength and 8-12 seems to be better for adding size. I just alternate each week. One week I will do bodybuilding style then the next week powerlifting style and I have had great success doing this. Like you said though sticking within the rep range of 5 is where I have seen by far the best strength gains. I usually do a 5x5 on when I am looking to really increase strength.
