Ok, you helped me out last time. Thanks. Kinda feel silly. I heard a friend tell me about a technique for squatting. He said icing your testicles helps raise your testosterone levels. I tried it and all that i got was an ice burn on my balls, and my squat went down five pounds. If it is true, should i ice after lifting? I iced befor i lifted last time. Thanks. Train hard and lift big weights. Ps. What is the financing option of weight releasers, say 36 months?

Thank god your "friend" did not tell you about a technique involving getting kicked in the balls to kick start test production. I am not sure where your "friend" got the idea, but if it really worked, I feel you would see a lot more ice packs to nuts scenarios unfold at major meets.
There have been studies to show that extreme cold exposure can lead to increased growth hormone production, but you dont see many lifters swimming in Lake Michigan.

The moral of the story is that although it is good to try new things, you have to know where to draw the line before you sterilize yourself.



{After reading this I figured I had to give this a try. You know I will try anything. Well, I got a butter dish and filled it up with water and put and apple in the middle of it, then put it into the freezer overnight. The next morning I cut the apple out and had a real nice hole just perfect to fit my Balls into. I figured this would be perfect. I could wear some loose shorts and pull myself out to the side and and place my bag in the dish as I drove to the gym. This way my test levels would be optimum when I arrived at the gym 45 minutes later. The dish worked perfect. While it hurt like hell in the beginning, the pain began to wear off with time. With Godsmack BLASTING over the speakers and gunning about 85 miles an hour, I knew once I got to the gym, the PR's would fall. Who else would be doing this? Could this be the edge I have been looking for the past 12 years? Well I ran into a bit of a traffic jam and got stuck next to a semi driver. The look in his face was of total shock. He had to be asking himself. Why in the hell does that big bald dude have his bag in a butter dish. Fu*& him! I gotta squat! Well the traffic jam kept me on ice for another 10 minutes. When I pulled into the parking lot I could actually feel the test building. I have not felt this much aggression since my wife ate all the HoHo's. When I stoped the car I figured it was time to pull my bag out and get in the gym. Well do you all remember the kid in the movie "The Christmas Story" Yep my bag was froze to the butter dish. Then it hit me, I had to walk into Westside Barbell Club with my bag frozen to a butter dish. I could see the look on Louie's face after I walked in the door holding my gym bag in one hand my belt in another and a butter dish attached to my bag. Well I could not deal with this so I had to get out of there asap. But at the same time I had to find a way to get this damn dish off my nuts. Then it dawn on me. There was a car wash down the street. So I made the trip down.....................................................................Then I woke up in a cold sweat. It was 2:30am and I was fine. No frozen balls or butter dish. It was all a dream (nightmare). This damn Q and A is now comming to me in my dreams. The moral of the story is. People who tell you this kinda stuff have no idea what they are talking about. -----Dave}

Charles Polquin recommends platemates for smaller jumps and continued progress in PR's. Do you use them at westside and if so are you planning on selling them in the future?

You are kidding me right? You mean those little magnet thing you stick on the bar. I can see it now, we are in the middle of a max effort training session. The stero is load the place is hot, we are all sweatting, aggressive and pissed off as we prepair for our next set of pin pulls. As I approack my pr I ask Louie to stick a freakin magnet on each side of the bar. I can see his face now as I write this. I can hear the shit I would catch not only from him but from all the other guys as well. We give each other shit it we have to grab the 2.5 pounds. If you don't have the balls to try and jump by at least 5 to 10 pounds then you need to find another sport. Part of the max effort training is to develope the aggressiveness to attack big weight, not small magnets. Why not just put more chalk on the bar than you used last time and call that a pr.

I guess you see how I feel about plate mates and why there is no way I would ever sell them. Now there are things called record plates we will use, or I should say, some of us will us in a meet. that is when they are trying to break a worl record.

BTW; keep this in mind, you are already making those same small jumps as the plate mates but do not know it. Very few plates weigh what they say they do. I have seen 45 pound plate off by as much a 2 to 3 pounds per plate.

I have quite a different question I want to ask you. One of my friends used to be a professional sprinter and weightlifter and he said that his team doctor advised him long before competition to cut out sex and the other one (I’m sure you can guess what I’m referring to!). If I was to do the same would my testosterone and aggression levels be higher? If it is advisable to cut it out – for how long would you say for and do you or any of your fellow powerlifting pals practice this act of discipline!

By the way since training the westside way my lifts go up every week without fail – Its magic!

If I had to give up sex to lift big weights, I would probably quit lifting altogether. It is not the sex that wears the guys out; it is staying up all night looking for it. If anything you would have super compensation after sex. Assuming you had an orgasm. If not the you would be frustrated. This can also be good for training. Now, since this is a question I have not been asked before, I have to have some type of fun with it. So here goes.
Recommended positions before bench day. Any thing except being on top. You know you don't want to wear your triceps out. Staying in a push up position for too long could affect your bench the next day. This position however would make for a great extra triceps workout the night after benching. You could even put a band around you back for more tension. When you get too worm out you can wrap the band around the top of the bed stand and use the lighten method (or reverse band sex) to knock out a few extra reps.
Recommended positions for the squat and deadlift: For this you also want to be on bottom. This way you can avoid the hamstring cramps from being on top and doggie will play hell on your hip flexors. If you are on bottom all you need to do is lay there and think about your next training session. Now the night after a max effort workout you can get real creative and wrap a band around your knees while on bottom and get in little extra hip work by forcing out on the band. You can also run the band around you back and put on end over each knee and use them to force the knees in for a little extra groin work. For doggie, wrap the band under your knees and the other around your head. Great for kneeling squats. Now for the dynamic squat workout. As we all know this is the most demanding off all training sessions and you are totally fried afterward so sex will be the last thing on your mind. If you use any kind of Thermadrol or anything else you probably wont work right ant way. This is wear you need the bands to help you out. This is really wear the lighten method on top comes in. You can also get at it doggie with one end of the band around your hips and the other around your partner for a super thrust. This way all you have to do is pull back.


I could write a whole book on this but will stop there. Some food for thought.
