Pushups

Can I get the lowdown on pushups. How should they be done, high rep, hand position, ect. Are they good for building muscle or more for muscular endurance and the like. Thanks

If you can do more then 10 push ups I would not recommend them for building muscle. It is simply not enough resistance. They can be good for endurance or as a burnout, maybe even a warm-up. In my opinion nothing is better for chest strenght and size then heavy barbell presses, however I do use dumbells too.

Push-ups are an excellent isolation exercise, with a varitey of positions. It is also a good exercise for if you are on the road and dont have a gym near to work out in.

As for mass gaining no, but lean muscle mass yes. Think of it this way if you weight about 150 and can bench 135 6 times, but can do 20 push-ups, slow and correct form.

Say you then develop and are able to do say 40 or 50 pushup, don't you think your bench will go up. The answer is yes. If you are doing 50 correct push up now your bench if before was 135 should be at a minimum of 150 for 6 reps easy.

i do them for athletics.

1. do a push up with ONE HAND on a medician ball and the other on the ground. then as you come up push off as hard as you can and roll the ball to the other hand and repeat.

2. feet on a chair and push ups on stibility ball

3. feet on chair then two chairs with a stibility ball in between them. go from a depth push up off the chairs and land on the stibilitly ball keeping your balance and do the same to get on the chairs to do a depth push up from the stibility ball.

In many ways, pushups are a more "legitimate" chest exercise. Benching requires technique and momentum and involves elbow/tendon strength, whereas pushups are pure pectoralis major and minor. A lot of guys can bench heavy but can't do 20 pushups. Since the pes are usually an easy bodypart to develop, pushups make a great pec workout, leaving them flat, wide and hard. Meanwhile, guys who fall in love with benching often wind up with bulbous, bunchy chests.

I will frequently perform 3 x 20 after my barbell presses and parallel dips. I think push ups are great for developing extra stabilizer strength in the upper back. Of course, they are a good chest builder. Overall, if you are looking to finish up your chest workout. . .add these.

They aren't a complete chest workout, but a great supplement. Also they are excellent when you are away from the gym, travelling, etc.

We do them in the army a lot. For our PT test we perform as many correct pushups as possible in 2 min. The most I've ever done is 85. You should try it!

Men's Fitness magazine this month has a great article on the pushup and many variations.

The correct method would be one in which you do a two second descend and a two second ascend from the ground up and pause a second both in the up and down position. That way you maximize your strength increase and endurance. Doing them that way and you won't be able to do more the maybe 30 the first time starting out. There are exceptions to every rule and if your bench 150% of your body weight 30 should be easy for you. If you benching less 30 is a good goal to start or shoot for. Karma for the good quesiton on push-ups though.
