protein shake before cardio?

Hi everyone,

I have a question. After my weight training session I drink this protein/fruit drink recommended by my trainer, then I do my cardio. I've read that it is good to do cardio after weights because you start to burn fat quicker but if I am drinking this shake prior to the cardio (500 calories) aren't I just using these calories for energy and not burning the fat?

Thanks for any advice.

500 cals? thats high, but I dont have any clue as to what your goals are or where you are in your training, etc. Your trainer my be trying to avoid catabolism. How long are your cardio sessions? What exactly is in your shake? I assume you are trying to lose some fat? There are many variables that could apply here, and I could think of a few reasons why he/she would have you eat b/f cardio.... but you need to give more info.

It is good to have a protien shake after your weights if you are doing long cardio and not eating for a while. But 500 cals is WAY to high it should be at least half that. Why fruit juce? That is not right either.

My trainer recommends that I drink this shake called "Naked" after my weight training. I read the label yesterday and it has 250 calories per serving but there are 2 servings per container. Also, it says that all the sugar is from real fruit juice. Also 20 grams of protein per serving as well, so 40 grams total. From what I've read it's good to have a protein shake with some type of fructose to spike your insulin after lifting weights, so I thought that was okay.

Anyway, my goals are to lose fat and build muscle. I've been working out with a trainer for one year. I started at 18% bodyfat and 124 lbs. and am now 11% body fat and 118 lbs. I still want to be leaner thus I have several questions, one being about drinking this shake before my cardio, which I do for 30 minutes.

Thanks for any more advice!

you should not be having that much sugar, fruit juices are a no-no when on a cutting program or competition diet. high protien, low carb, low sugar shake before cardio after weights. and post work out meal of protein, veggies, and a starch. look into different shakes. when you are trying to get a low bf% you really have to have a clean diet.

Sugar is the devil.... evilllllllllllllll. wether it's "natural" from fruit or not. I know you are just doing what your trainer prescribes, which is good by you. I would think that protien with some gatorade would do the insilun spike for you nicely with much less sugar. 1 part gatorade 3 parts water, and your scoop of protien powder. How much lower bf do you want?

Thank you for the gatorade advice. I am going to try that. I will mix it myself and bring it with me to the gym.

I don't want to have to go too much lower on the body fat but I don't know how else to be able to see my ab muscles. Also I would like more definition in my thighs. I love the look of really muscular but slim legs.
My trainer says that your stomach is the last place where your body tries to hold on to fat, even though they say you loose it equally all over, still the belly tries to hold on to some.

I appreciate your advice. Thanks much!

Especially on women, estrogen encourages fat to be held around the middle - stomach, thighs, ass. You are losing bodyfat equally across your body but there tends to be larger concentration of fat cells in those areas that "lose the last".

Just to keep things in perspective, be aware that the pix you see of competitive figure girls is not the shape they are in year round. The point you want to find is where you can be healthy while maintaining. Not sure everyone can see their abs year round - so just to keep your goals in perspective. I LOVE my shape near competition time, but off season it is NOTHING like that.

Thanks guys.
I am just really eager to get a "hard" body and would like to see some major progress by summer. I've never been very toned or muscular, instead skinny fat mostly. I just want to do anything to see some great results. I feel like I'm on kind of a plateau right now. I am 36 years old and have 3 kids. I've been learning alot on this site.

Thx,
Jessica

I am drinking whey protein, and fruit juice also from a recommendation from my trainer after weight training, but I think I am bulking first, should I try the gatorade as well, or stick to the fruit juice? Also just started, had three shakes yesterday (morning, noon, night) and last night I had major cramping in my back, could that be from the whey protein? I also put the glutimine in after my workout.
