Protein powder will not help you lose weight... eating less calories than you burn will help you lose weight... protein powder being a portion of those calories is up to you. It is not necessary, but it will work.

Keep in mind your body burns more calories burning a solid versus a liquid, so don't O.D. on the shakes when cutting.

If there is a good time for it, it would be post workout... and whey with fruit is a great post workout protein shake. Fruit isn't very calorically dense..u might want to add in a 1/2 cup of oats with one piece/serving of fruit.

To a point yes,the body uses more energy processing protein than carbs or fats[at least that's what I've read]
This is true, the body burns more calories to process protein that fat. But if your serious you shouldn't have a high level of fat in your diet.

You should not have a high level of BAD fat in your diet

protein shakes don't take more energy to digest then fats. Infact, their GI is higher. Eat more fish, chicken or turkey breast, buffalo sirloin, or 99% lean beef. Flavored, naturally sweetened protein shakes are good for killing appetite and getting clean calories, but nothing to hype about.
