Portfolio Management?

Hopefully some of you guys can help me out with this career question I have. I work for a major Wall Street brokerage firm selling stocks, bonds, mutual funds, etc. Most of my job consist of cold calling and networking. Let me just tell you "I absolutely hate it." I feel like I am begging people for there money and getting no response, possibly because my experience in the industry hasn't been too long.
Well here is the thing. I love the industry that I am in, just don't enjoy the sales aspect of it. I have been doing research on different positions within the industry, and have found interest in a portfolio analyst position. My question is, what would you guys say is the best way to get my feet in the door of porfolio management? I have 1 year of experience as a stock broker and a ba degree. I plan on working on my MBA part time. Where should I start looking? Thanks

work at your MBA...use this experience to learn...meet people in various aspects of the business....just work hard at what youre doing now,,and eventually you'll come across some good opportunities.

Most reputable places are not requiring their Portfolio Managers to obtain the CFA designation. That is a way in. As is an MBA. As is experience, which you're now getting.

Have fun with the CFA and Part-Time MBA man, they're both journeys. They take 3 years each, but you can try to do them at the same time while you're working too. (GOOD LUCK WITH THAT!)

Thanks all for the responses. It seems like MBA and/or obtaining a CFA designation seems to be the way. I actually received a call from CalPers(California Public Employees' Retirement System)wanting to meet and speak about a possible position as an investment officer. I guess the job calls for analyzing external portfolio managers. Anyone have experience or know of anyone who's had experience working with CalPers.
