Syntax - (a cheap, off brand) is it reliable or a piece of crap?
search online and find out who manufactured the screen/panel/tube whatever. liek d1 said above, critical components in cheapies are often made by well regarded manufacturers, particularly samsung for some bizarre reason - which are very good imo

samsung makes everything. every picutre tube in any tv is made by samsung. samsung makes Akia that is there off brand

I have an LCD in the den and one in each of three bedrooms (32" in the den, 19" in the three bedrooms).

If I were to buy again for the den, I would have bought a plasma. Plasmas are much brighter, but as others have pointed out, don't last as long. While the light in an LCD fades and will need replacement, it's a lot easier to replace them if something goes wrong. Plasma pixels are lit individually. If one goes out, you have to replace a whole set of pixels, which is a lot more expensive.

With prices dropping so fast, if you buy a plasma now and need to buy one in five years, the prices will likely be more affordable.

On a funny note, my father bought a 50" Pioneer plasma about 5 years or so ago. He spent a LOT of money for it (about $20,000). For some odd reason, he and my mom took it off the wall to adjust something. As they were putting it back up, they dropped the TV. My mom called to tell me about it and I thought someone was dying. I've never seen my dad so upset about something in his life.

i thought the samsung dlp tvs looked amazing.

I'm definitely a DLP fan. The picture quality never fades, best contrast of colors/blacks and are viewable from a considerable angle. They're even light. My 42" Samsung weighs about 60 pounds and is just a tad over a foot deep. Put it this way; under normal viewing if you're not fuzed to the couch all day every day, the bulb will last about as long as the picture quality on a more expensive plasma tv. So instead of buying a whole new tv you can just drop a benjamin or two. They're easier than a plasma on your power bill too. Overall they're the best technology out there, and are getting better each "generation." Plasma I've read is dead end technology. LCD is better suited for computer screens.

Ok, I have did some research but I need some more info.

From my understanding LCD and DLP tv's require "lamp replacements" every so often, which is quite pricy. Is this true?
If so I do not want that.

I am leaning towards plasma. From what I've read, they will last approx 40,000 to 60,000 hours of viewing time. However there is no lamp replacement or any maintenance required. Is this true?
The only downside is they are more subject to "burn in".

Karmafor any advice/info.

I really like my Samsung SlimFit CRT. It has awesome contrast, plenty of brightness, and the life of a regular TV. It's only 30" (about 12" deep)but it's a good fit for the size of my room, and the Xbox 360 looks amazing on it.

Much of your decision will have to relate to what you want to spend and how big you want it to be. DLP will definitely give the best size for the $.
