one more bit of advice that i will tell you and i see this A LOT at the gym... is guys who train using their ligaments and tendons, and not their muscles. don't go heavy if it means you are using poor form. you want to work the muscles, not the soft tissues. that could be a big part of your problem right there.
your goal is to rip up the muscle fibers, get nutrients into the muscle and blood.
