I've been doing pushups for a long time, a year probably with no more than a day of not doing them

I dont' seem to get any improvement though, I always hover around 30-40 before I can't do anymore that set.

y?

If your doing them everyday, your definitelty overtraining them...
Try tossing some resistance on your back and see how many you can do... try moving your knuckles into different positions... Maybe do some extra sets...
Not many people here advocate bodyweight training so you'll probably be kinda hard pressed to get too many answers.
Thanks

Alright, thanks

Most peoples goal in here is size, my goal is performance- (yes I'm a bruce lee fan, lol)

I just couldn't figure out why I wasn't being able to do more.

My hands _were_ about shoulder width apart, and I felt it more in my triceps than chest! then I've been concentrating on keeping them wider and doing them proper. I've packed a duffel back full of old clothes and a weight or two and it's easily over 60 pounds, I think I'm gonna try to put that on my back maybe?

yeah, like dr. bones said, pretty much everyone on here uses weights. i don't think anyone on here does pushups everyday. your chest and tris have just reached a point where they're like, "damn! can i get some rest over here!!" when you're nailing them everyday for a max set of pushups, you're fatiguing them to a point that you should really only be doing every few days or so. no need to wail on them like that everyday, otherwise you'll be in Overtrain Land before you know it.
what are your goals? are you going after a general feeling of being in shape, trying to drop fat, gain weight?

Endruance, strength, power, speed, everything a wannabe martial artist could want ;)

Not nessarily size though

drop fat, increase endurance (aka being able to do more pushups), power, etc.

Burn,

It all sadly comes down to genetics and how YOUR body will respond to exercise. In the grand scheme, that is the law.
IMO I think push ups can be done every day, as well as pull ups (unweighted). Why not add weight if you are not experiencing growth? Weighted push ups would be different and would require you to have a strong core (abs/lower back). Weighted pull-ups are just flat out tremendous.

Hershel Walker made push-ups popular when I was growing up. He had been rumored to do 1000 a day. Whether he did 1 or 1000, he still had superior genetics. We have to remember the laws of genetics and training;

All men were not created equal.

Good luck. Let me know if you try out those weighted pull ups/push ups and how they worked out for you.

Roger-
I was on the raider team in JROTC, I think my best was about 45 pushups, ~12 pullups. After I graduated in 2001, I kinda got lazy :( no one said "do these" and I had to get used to that. My running was shot to hell as well and I plan to get that back in a few.

My max weight after I graduated was about 160, I think I'm down to about 150 now. My average weight in high school was around 140- not sure how much BF% but I estimated (from some online thing) around 20% at my max weight and thats prolly down a little now as well. Once I get back into running it should go further.

Genetically, I don't know. I'm naturally strong I think (first time I ever touched freeweights, I benched ~170, and I weighed probably ~135-140. Lol at that time I could find a solid pole and lift my body almost perpendicular to the ground with my arms. I was a lil munkey :D

I just tried the weighted pullups (flack jacket = 8.5 lbs, two 7.5 lb weights in pockets ~23 lbs) and could only do 3 (palms away)

I'm gonna try the weighted pushups tonight.

The thing with the pushups is, after my arms kinda get tired and I've rested in between, I feel like I can do like an unlimited amount. I mean I just bust out with them, and as long as I have a little pause after ~20-30 I feel like I could keep doing them. It's just getting the max reps at once that I have trouble with >.<
