need help w/ protein bar

Okay, Diamond and kwkslver have given me two different opinions!

Kwik, I *AM* on a low-carb diet. The only "carb" in my bars is glycerin. So will that spike my insulin or what???

Help! Thanks!

the debate over this issue is a fierce one....

Next Nutrition (makers of the Designer bars) claim that the effect of glycerin on blood sugar is so low that glycerin doesn't even have a GI rating.....but ofcourse they are out to sell bars....they have quite an elaborate ad in the new Muscle and Fitness that claims they will no longer hide the fact that their bars contain glycerin.....

....they are now promoting glycerine as a revolutionary "new" carb that doesn't make you fat.....I'd take these claims with a grain of salt.....the whole thing still seems shady....

regardless of this....sugar alcohol is not simple SUGAR....in fact they put this stuff into diabetic candies and things of that nature, precisely because it is not absorbed by the body the same way traditional carbohydrates are - yet they are still classified as a carb...and we know that they pack 4.32 cal/g.....

... I say the jury is still out on the entire matter.....

bottom line - it's easier to stick with REAL food!!!

at least that way you know what's going into your body - and you won't have to second guess a list of ingredients or try to wade through the bullshit propaganda of supplement companies!!

save the bars for an occasional meal when you're away from home or don't have the time for real food....

Isn't glycerol used to synthsize bodyfat from dietary fats? I mean, triGLYCERIDES? Wouldn't you want to avoid this stuff like the plague, then?

That's glycerOL. Different than glycerINE. I know--it's damn confusing!!!

I think there is atom-splitting, then this. On the complexity scale, I mean. Ugh!

Here's what i can tell you.

I'm on lower carbs than most (20grams/day) and there are 2 protein bars the do not spike my blood sugar. One is Atkins Advantage and the other is Carb Solutions and you can find both at Wal-mart. Even Atkins himself a.k.a The Carb Natzi as he seems to be called here ;) stamps on the back of his:
Polydextrose and glycerine, while included in the "calories" count, have been omitted from the "Total Carb" count as their impact on blood sugar/insulin levels is negligble.

Oh, I thought glycerol and glycerine were the same. Man, you have to have PhDs in chemistry and biology just to figure out how to eat right!

Maybe we just make it harder than it is.
