My dad used to have a scanning tunneling microscope (well, not his technically, but he used it, it was in his lab, etc).

That works in a very general sense like a record player - there is a tungsten pin that you cut at a certain angle and way to leave a single atom of the tungsten at the tip... no wait... was it atom or electron? I don't recall, but, then you drag it over what you want to scan and it goes up and down, and the tip is connected to a thing that watches that movement and then that is translated out to the screen and you get a scan of the thing you just scanned at the level of idiviudal atoms.
it worked best with large atoms - like scanning graphite - the carbon atoms all lined up were cool looking.

anyway - I used the same technique and dragged a sharp needle over my penis to see it better, and it hurt.
