My friend told me that weightlifting can shave a couple years off your life he says its bad for you i honestly dont believe it for a minute. Tell me is it true?

Only if you drop the weight on your head.

AS long as your diet and workout routine are tight, you will likely outlive your friend. Tell your friend to come to EF and educate hiimself if he is going to give out advice like that.

you seem to hang out with a couple of morons...

first the creatine, and now this...?

i can't wait to hear his next epiphany...

This type of ignorance from your friend is very evident in all realms of society, so he is not alone ... .

Ask him to give you specifics and cite some sources... what possible evidence can he give you to back up such a statement... Seriously, I'm dying to hear what he says.

Here's only ONE for ya ...

"Weight training increases strength and endurance; improves muscle fiber type distribution; reduces the number of motor units needed to do work; lowers catecholamine levels in the blood; reduces heart failure symptoms when doing the normal activities of daily living; increases NO (nitric oxide) production, which relaxes arteries; and increases bone density."

Your friend is an idiot... Humans are made with the ability to lift weights. In the stone age they were lifting stones to make wheels lol =)

Your friend probably just doesn't want you to lift weights and get bigger than he is....Now do as your told and go drop that 45 pound plate on his head.

In the technical sense, weightlifting CAN shave few years off your life. Let's explore this:

First, the statement just implies that your life may be shortened specifically due to weight lifting. It does not mention that this is the case for all, or what must occur to make this happen, only that it is even a slight possibility.

Next, let's discuss what might occur to cause weightlifting to be at fault for shortening one's life. Assume Big Rick is lifting and he is squatting his usual 600 lbs but happens to be a little sick to his stomach. He gets nauseous mid rep and passes out with 600 resting on his traps. He falls diagonally onto the squat rack with 600 lbs+ (inertia) of pressure on the back of his neck slamming into the side of the squat rack. Luckily for Big Rick, he happens to be unconcsious before his neck snaps. Now if Big Rick doesn't die instantly, I will bet that his lifespan was shaved off a bit due 100% to weight lifting.

Now back to reality, your friend made a generalized comment, P -> Q (P implies Q) Where P = "If one lifts weights frequently" then Q ="They will not live as long as if they did not lift weights frequently".
Your idiot friend probably heard something along the lines of lifting weights causing excess work for the heart and leap to the conclusion of that being bad for one's health. This MAY be the case for someone who has had one or two major MIs(heart attacks) and should put as little work on their heart in the first place, but these are exceptions to 'the average person'.

In short, your friend is a dumbshit.
