My first call!

tryin2tone

New member
Went on my first fire call yesterday, luckily the family made it out safe, but as the fire engulfed the house I heard the family dog whining thru the broken door. I spent the next 10 minutes trying to explain to the family that maybe she got out, as they cried cause they thought they lost her. As the efforts to put out the flames continued, a fellow firefighter walked out from behind the truck, WITH THE DOG......SOMEHOW SHE GOT OUT!!!!! I thought I was going to be sick, but as soon as I saw that pups beautiful face, I just smiled and seeing the family so happy, Omg, its a feeling you can't describe.

Welcome to the field rookie!

Got yourself an adrenaline rush and now youll be hooked for life!

Glad everything went smoothly

I could never do wut u do

Risk my life to save others ... possibly

Risk my life to save property ... ummmmmh, no

You do it to save people, not things. Ive never cared about stuff, I've just always cared about people. The man's grandbabies were in the house with him, he had a Harley in the garage, he stood there and watched it burn, as it burned up he turned to me, pointed at his 4 year old granddaughters and said that's what is important, that's what I'm happy got saved, everything else can be replaced.

You will be called upon to save things at your own personal risk

Yes. That was explained to me. But some things are important to people. Heirlooms, pictures.

Yeah, unfortunately assessing the value of property before putting yourself at risk isn't in the equation of your duty.

I'm glad their are people like yourself that will take that risk.

cool story...glad the dog made it..it helps and obviously glad the entire family made it out..its a terrifying experience because it moves so fast and more or less quietly besides the snapping and popping and dull roar. Its hard to judge how close it is.

when they realize every piece of their life history is gone..they'll be a bitter about it

for instance if one more person tells me "its just stuff" I may actually punch them out then ask them to replace my babies newborn caps and going home outfits while they lay on the ground bloodied

jus sayin

That's one thing I try to avoid saying. Because to me its just stuff, but to them, its exactly what you're saying, all their babies "firsts", wedding pictures, pictures of childhoods they will never see again. I really wouldn't want someone to say that to me.

I'm knot saying "stuff" ain't important, I've lost most of my personal history to floods

I'm saying "stuff" isn't as valuable as human life

just sayin'

and stopping being so obtuse

you know wut I mean about property

Grats on your new career & hoping you don't perish in an insurance job

Signed,
the coalition of C&C'ers that couldn't do it cuz we don't have the nads and/or rawk boy pussies

lolol...theyre just tryin to shake ya up

one of my better friends is a 5' nothin female level 2 ff and paramedic
she used to be my partner on the ambulance garage

shes incredibly well respected among her peers...just don't ever play damsel in distress and the men and the women in the field will respect you

I ain't worried about them. I am definitely not damsel in distress. I just started, so I'm still at the bottom of the food chain, but ima still brag.

Last week our ER got three victims of a house fire. The parents had 3rd degree burns to 80% of their bodies and their 10yr old daughter came in without a pulse. You never forget the smell of burning flesh

did any of them make it?:worried:

That is definitely something I would be happy to never smell. I'm with nan..... Did they make it? How bout the little girl?

the worst part is its an oily sootiness...burning bodies
its gets all up in your sinuses and literally takes a couple of days to go away

3rd degree burns to 90% of their bodies...and a pulseless child after being xported?? its probable none of them made it
I only hope they all perished quickly before infection got them

or rotting flesh. Ever smelled someone that has been dead outside in the sun for a few days??

I had one that the coroner estimated between 30-45 days...in a bath tub with what used to be water in it..in the summer...w/o AC

I did actually lose my cookies on that call...but so did everyone else

the thought that one cat was dead and the other still alive (and seemingly fine) in the house was what actually made me puke more so than the smell

I hear they found the man eating kitty a nice home too

I sorted through a bunch of dead bodies one time. First, everything I smelled reminded me of the dead body - shampoo, smoked almonds and all thai food. Then it got to where it was just bad stuff like trash or sewage that triggered that smell. Now, 7 yrs later, it is just something rotten, like bad meat or a dead animal. But I still smell it - will never forget.

The bathtub scene sounds just about as bad as anything I could imagine. FUCK.

In firefighting there are many things to learn especially when death is involved.

for your own sanity remember this

"You did not cause the fire or accident, you did not put that person in this situation all you can do is what you can do"

Point being, no matter how bad the situation is before you get there, it's always better once you are there..

and

In no other situation, no other career will you show up at someone's house and a woman will run out of the house and hand you her child as she runs back in, she doesn't know you from adam, but she's glad you are there and knows she can trust you..

Besides, everyone hates the cops but love the firefighter..

Good times.. congrats on the 1st call, I live in a city of 22k people we do 55=65 on average calls a month, with 12 real fires this year, it's been a crazy year, the rest are down power lines, gas alarms, CO alarms, 1 baby delivery, heart attacks (most between 6am and 8am) and recently a lot of heat strokes..

Just remember what i said above and you'll be ok.. wait til you have to go to an Echo medical and it's a teen kid that's hung them self.. not good for anyone.

Thanks for your service..

Op, I'm in rescue services myself and Congrats on popping your cherry. I'm in the medical sector personally but were all brothers in arms in my mind

I'm still just a newb and I know there is so much I need to learn, I'm going to work the fire side a while and then move to the medics. Right now I'm just the gopher, I can administer cpr and first aid, and that's about all.
Thank you to the rest of you. For the heads up on what to expect. And for your service as well.

Definitely, from my first day at the station, it felt like a family. They always ask about my family, how I am, and happy to help with any questions I have

We got the parents intubated right away and I even got two 14g iv's in each feet of both of them. They're ABC's were stable when we transferred them but no way will they make it past a few weeks. The mother especially had terrible facial burns, no real nose and hair completely melted to her head. The child was not able to brought back unfortunately.

Jesus fuck!
Way to kill the mood romeo,
I just kicked my ol'lady in the stomach and flushed all her contacts down the toilet!
Fuck im pissed!

There was a 12 year old son that was able to escape unharmed. Talk about being scarred for life, holy fuck does he have a tough road ahead of him

stick to moar light hearted ER stories

like dislodging foreign objects from peeps' butts

Scarred seems like an understatement. Hopefully he's got family that's close and he doesn't end up in the system.

jesus...feet...
props to your team for getting lines started anywhere
cooked skin and flat veins. what a fucking disaster.

we had one call that I wasn't the primary on but did deal with what used to be my regular partners aftermath...
where the victim had arguably 4th degree burns...we actually looked it up and its apparently a semi controversial grade
charred bone and the victim was still conscious

spys right...kid suicides are fuckin horrible
being the person that gets to "presume" (ct didn't legally allow "pronounce" in the field for a while) that death sucks shit bad
course I didn't even like doing it when it was the basic elderly person that died in their sleep either

I hate the noises they often make when you roll em over/move em

upside tryin...wait till you have a fritzy co alarm that goes off for the umpteenth time in 24 hrs and you just wanna rip the thing out of the wall and stomp on it...haha

all emergency services are like family...all up in your shit and cook you food you may not like then insist you eat it..and you can't get rid of em...haha
but in all seriousness they're usually super good peeps but you'll meet plenty that are in to grandiosity and don't really give a shit beyond being able to get all up in the fray

here's one for ya

When a roofer falls off a roof and dies his friends and family come to the services

When a fire fighter dies especially in the line of duty 100's of brothers come out for the service, reaching out to the widow and kids..

I don't know of any other.. Cops do to a point however again, the perception of the populace is they are all rotten, but every body loves a firefighter.

the thin blue line is its own thing...different but not really any less or more tight

an "ambulance driver" gets no respect from anyone..haha

they're sum firefighters in my county that are fat fucks

even fatter than me

don't understand how they could climb a high rise ladder, or retrieve an adult from multiple flights of stairs without sum sort of coronary event

Had a guy two months ago get caught in the act of an attempted suicide by his mother. While she was trying to take the shotgun from him, he reached around and pushed the trigger. Entry wound was his nipple and exit wound was his entire rib cage.

Arrived on scene in less than 7 mins and got to see a human heart beating in the chest through the gap where his lung used to be

Probably one of the more serious wounds ive seen where the patient lived

We didnt have a dressing big enough to seal 3 sides so we used a fuckin plastic ziplock bag off the truck cab. God knows what was in it initially

Also got in alot of shit for entering a residence where a shooting took place without PD being there first but the fucker would have died if.we woulda waited so it is what it is

I have yet to see a story about a firefighter/medic abuse another person in any way. The latest story in which I speak, the RI police officer that kicked a drunk, handcuffed woman who was sitting on the sidewalk square in the side of her head, knocking her unconcious. And there are many other stories like this.

Thanks. Yes, I definitely agree about the advice. It just feels like what I should do. I like to know how things happen, I like to help people, and yea I know sometimes things won't turn out as well as I would like them to, but that's life.

Fuck yea, my two favorite things in the trauma rooms are a cracked chest and an emergency crike. It's been awhile since I've had both on the same patient. Last time was a marine that just returned home and his dryer blew up cooking over 90% of his body. He started with peripherals and ended up with a femoral central line, arterial line, emergency crike since his airway completely closed up then cracked his chest as a last ditch effort

how the hell does a dryer blow up? ive been to dryer fires but no explosions

Anything running off 220 has enough voltage to arc out and fry the fuck out of you. All it takes is a bad ground or exposed wire

No idea, we actually had the FBI questioning all the staff the following week. It was a gas dryer with an apparent leak and he was smoking.

It really is amazing how random a lot of traumas are. Being exposed to it for as long as I have has made much more careful in a lot of things I do.

Lolololol damn nevermind, he was almost asking for that one

My house doesnt have gas, but cant you fucking smell a leak? Dont they put some kind of chemical in natural gas now that makes it detectable??

I know propane smells strong as hell when it is leaking....thats a scary smell in a house thats burning......

gas dryers are amazing...we put electric back in because of venting logistics and I hate it by comparison

maybe the dude had no sense of smell...I know a shitload of vets that don't anymore because their sinuses got cooked from burning pollutants in the sandbox

tryin..you'll see FF and emergency medicine peeps abuse people too...and it will make you absolutely sick
its all human beings I just think cops get jaded earlier in their careers because no one does ever thank them...don't think the blue canaries aren't valuable too tho
quite a few have had my back when it was needed

Yea shirl, I know, I have seen it but its seems more rare than the police doing it. Yes, I know a couple of the boys in blue and I can cite a few times where they've had my back when I needed it. I think its all in how you act or react to what they approach you with. I can tell you, if someone jumped up in my face I'd probly want to chop a bitch in the throat, but wouldn't cause I hate getting in trouble, and it wouldn't be worth it to me.

I just wrote my FF 1 FF2 and Hazmat op final, 91% , feel good to be so much closer to getting the education to go with my experience, hopefully one day I can do this full time

Awesome, good job.
I start EMT classes in August. That's my ultimate goal, to make this my full time gig

SOT?

Up here there seems to be a trend of hiring community college grads with no experience just education, and the guys with experience are having a harder time landing a full time gig, unless they want to work in the alberta oil sands, I could have that job tomorrow, but 15 days on 6 days off sounds terrible.
