I work in the technical field. I appreciate the value of bandwidth. Companies live and die by bandwidth. Business is Business. This is the way it must be. At the end of this we can all try an experiment, to the winner comes fame and maybe fortune. Read on.
I noticed Elitefitness back in 1996 when I got my first real PC . (I had a commodore before that, lol). I 'm not sure when elite actually came online. But I really glad I found it and that it is still here. Back in 96 wasn't 56k great. It was fast compared to 33.6k and 28.8k. (I still remember using a 1200 baud modem with my friends.) How many of you are switching over to DSL or cable? Why? With that you have to pay more, right. Do you need high speed internet, no. But you want it. Have any of you had any significant problems with Georges site? No! rarely there is a glitch but it's repaired ASAP, right. This will tie into the experiment at the end. Read on.
I am never satisfied with being average. Why are you all here, your not satisfied with being average either, obviously!
George is running a business, like many have echoed. George has a great thing going here. He is constantly improving it. Look at the difference between elite in 1996 and 2001 Hell look at the difference this time last year. I value this board and everything I have learned here.
Here's my experiment. You hecklers lets try and do what George did.
It's just you so you can do a search for a free website. Any search engine will do. Found one you like, yet? OK. So basically you get a 5 megabyte website. Do a little research on that search engine again and find a free message board. ( Doesn't look the same though? But oh well.) Oh boy now we're cooking! ( You can register your own domain if you like and get the perks that come with it, 200 megabytes of space on average, etc.. But that costs money, $$$.)
Now you have your site with your message board. But it's been 3 months and no one had posted to it yet. Damn it. Let's go to that search engine again and try and advertise your great new website. So you submit it to the search engines. Cool, now you'll get some hits. But you go back to those search engines and type in your keywords and then it's still not there, hmmmm. They put you on the bottom of the list. How do you get near the top? I guess you'll have to spend some more money, $$$. Damn it. You have a few choices you can go to a Pro or download/buy some website submission tools. Your choice. Go back to your favorite search engine and look up some of the prices.
Now you have your tools or your Pro helping you out. But somehow your still not getting any hits or very little hits to your website. You had to waste a little money, $$$.
Now it's either situation A or B.
A. Maybe your website design is the problem. Remember people are picky. They either like it or they don't. But nevertheless you want your website to succeed. I think it's time to call on a Pro to redesign your website with all the little things that you don't even want to know about, like those damn Meta tags and search engine spiders, etc...
B. Your site is doing great. the Pro really helped out. More and more people are hitting your site everyday. But, now your running out of space and/or bandwidth. ( Yeah web hosts only give you a certain amount of gigabytes of traffic per month and a certain amount of megabyte space on their server.) NOW you can leave it as is and have your site shut down sometime in the month or you'll have to upgrade your account. More money, $$$. It's a never ending cycle. Ask George how many people hit his site per day on average. Then hit the search engine and see what it wold cost you just to host it. Not to mention the staff to support the site.
Try it! Not as easy as you thought, huh.
I know from personal experience. I have my own domain with some good technical information and my own message board. (A good one at that, similar to this one, not as many features though.) I have advertised it, redesigned it and do you know how many hits I got last month. Zero, nadda, zilch. Sad, but that's business you either make it or you don't. I can't afford to hire a Pro right now and even if I do I really don't have the time to update the site on a daily basis. It's not as easy as it seems.
The point is that money makes thing happen. You pay for your gym membership right. You pay for your internet access right. You pay for your car insurance right. Do you need to go the the gym or drive a car. NO You choose to do so.
George provides a GREAT service for us all. You all hit your favorite search engine and you found many sites, right. But you come back here. Do you need the Platinum service? No. Do you want it, that's up to you. $.39 a day? You loved the service when it was free. Even when George was forced to limit it, remeber that with the avatars. What did George say, bandwidth issues. If I'm not mistaked George warned about future bandwidth issues.
Listen to what the man is saying!
