My ankel is broken this evening.

I REALLY feel for you,

As a matter of fact i am recovering from a broken ankle at his very moment (the last 6 months, I only started training again this month, this is longer than usual as the operation incision got bacterial infected with hospital bacteria!!!
I suggest you get out of the hospital asap and also let them check very very frequently for infections, so that they can prescribe anti-biotics in a timely matter))

What i can tell you is that it's very very important to keep your leg on an incline angle (put some elevation on/under your "matras" (what's the english word for it?)

Also use recline chairs and a stool and cushions to put your leg on ( prefery 45 degrees incline, so gravity really help, this is much better than anything lower

This will allow swollen bloat to flow away easier.

Swimming and biking can be done to regain basic flexibillity/endurance even BEFORE you are able to walk.

The muscles round my right knee got very weak from non-uses and a bit stiff. I should have used a leg-extension/leg curl machine earlier in the process to keep it's function up to par, now I have to work overtime to get back.

Thank our creator for muscle memory. My upperbody is returning in a relatively short time once i comenced training again

When you can make the first steps and you start training the ankle, it's beneficial to put some ice on it to improve bloodcirculation/ reduce swollen

Mags, I am SOOOOoooo sorry to hear this! Grrr, how frustrating and painful for you! I'm sending you healing waves across the cybersphere - wishing for your quick recovery. Keep your spirits up girl and don't do anything silly to prolong your recovery now!

My cast was taken away today. Yaah! My ankel is swolled still of course and quite stiff. I have a 20 centimeter scar on the outside of it and about a 15 centimeter thick raised one on the inside of my ankel. Quite nasty looking.

AND MY LEG WAS LIKE CHEWBACCA!

I begin with the elastic bands now to put back the strengh and flexibliy of the ankel. I can walk on it, but it cannot bend so it is a big limp.

Have lost 3/4 of a inche from my thighs since the injury, down to 27 3/4 but somehow no change in my calf size at all. Strange.

I was looking just now at all the kind comments the day i broke this ankel and i was so happy becuase of it. That day was quite depressing. Thanks so much all! :D :D

magdelana,

i'm so happy you are better! i'm also very happy you bumped this old thread....my husband completely dislocated his ankle three weeks ago today. he's going thru all the emotions you went thru. they never put him in a cast, and he had surgery to put the ankle back in the joint, no pins tho. his was a subtalar dislocation and was open as well. any tips on keeping his spirits up? they said he'll be down 12 weeks....i hope they are wrong. he's already in therapy, doing the alphabet as poohbear said she did and picking up marbles with his toes, etc. seems to be improving daily. i hope he recovers as quickly as you did!

it happened to me that I underwent surgery early march and the doctor said that it would take for me the whole healing process about 8 weeks before even trying to workout... i was desperate, but my boyfriend (who's bodybuilder too) made a whole research in what supplements may help.
In my case, which was a muscular thing I took extra protein, glutamine, aminoacids. In a sort of way we bent the rules, because the doctor said that I should only have 1 meal in the afternoon.... 1 meal!!! so I was just awakening from the surgery when he already had a big protein shake there for me. My recovery time was shorter than the doctor expected.
So in your case because it is a bone thing, it comes to my mind taking calcium like adding more to one you already take daily... maybe some tablets which also include vitamin D3 and vitamin K, glucosamine may also help. Do search on things that can make your bones stronger and not getting catabolic in the process.
For your scar, after 3 weeks try using a silicon sheeting for about two months in your scar, then buy a cream called Mederma (found in walgreens and k-marts) and use it 3-4 times per day for about two months. It works very well to smooth scars.
