Lactose VS Fructose

I am big fan of a smoothie for breakfast. I usually make my smoothies with fresh fruit and fruit juice with just a bit of non fat yoghurt. However someone recently told me that i would be better off using non fat milk instead of fruit juice to mix as Fructose [fruit sugars] is worse than lactose [milk sugars]. Any opinions on which is better in terms of sugar consumption? K for the good stuff.

It depends. Fructose needs to be accompanied by glucose otherwise it cannot be absorbed well. In other words, fructose from fruits (which also contain glucose) is good.

Lactose is a bisacharide. Once split it contains the monosacharides glucose and galactose. Both can be used well by the body, BUT not everyone is capable of splitting them to due to lack of lactase in the body. Most human beings stop producing lactase when they reach adulthood, which is called lactose intolerance.

Which is best? I would not know. I'd go for the fruits probably, since it's a bit more natural, and most people (I remeber reading over 90% outside of Europe) are lactose intolerant anyway.

From the scenario you have presented I would recommend that you use milk instead of fruit juice. There's not a significant difference in absorption rates or GI, so there's not really an answer to the 'what sugar is best?' question, sorry :) However, when you are comparing milk and fruit juice, other things come into it, such as vitamin, mineral and protein content, which is where milk comes out on top. In my opinion, skip the fruit juice in the morning and have some more real fruit later on in the day and get the extra vitamins and fibre that come with it.

Hope this is of some assistance it's kind of a ninja-answer as I am in a hurry if you would like more information let me know!

Not meaning to pick at this response, but I would say that milk and fruit juice are equally 'natural', both go through some processing before they reach the supermarket shelf, but I guess that is open to interpretation :p

What I meant with natural is that most adult human do not produce lactase and thus it's less natural to drink milk (except for children) :)

thanx for the input guys. Hey Trez, it's good to see another aussie on the board bro. Their just ain't enough of us. I live in sydney now but used to be a gold coast boy!
P.s, I'm thinking i will go with the non fat milk and eat more fresh fruit during the day.

Are you cutting Bro?

When cutting (about all the time, lol) I simply discard fruit, the reason being two-fold:

1. I've nevr been a great fan of fruit, I mean, I will eat it if given to me, but it's not like I will buy it, prepare it, etc... so no big loss for me

2. When cutting you have your daily caloric allowance to work with, with that in mind, I'd rather use those cals in something that will either a) have protein b) have some good EFAs in it c) help replenish muscle glycogen.

Since fruits don't fall in those categories, I have to go with something that offers more bang for my caloric buck
