Know What You're Taking!!!

Lemme re-phrase this...

There's this huge chick that works out where I work and we got to talking about fat burners. She started talking about popping 9-12 pills a day because this particular pill that she's taking burns fat while it retains muscle mass. I said, "Really? What's in it that makes you retain muscle mass while you burn fat?" To which she responded, "I don't know, I'm just going by what the company tells me!"

It left me wondering... if she doesn't have any clue what's in her fat burners, then how does she know she's not slowly killing herself or destroying her body with whatever else she's taking? Very scary...

I bring this up because there are a lot of people on this board that are new to fitness/bodybuilding/supplementation, etc. PLEASE know what you're putting into your body. DON'T just take something because a) someone tells you to or b) it sounds like a good idea. EDUCATE YOURSELF. If you don't know enough to carry on a conversation about the supplement, Google it. Know what the ingredients are and how they will affect your body. Know how and why it should work. Know what the side effects are. Most importantly, USE COMMON SENSE. If it sounds like a crock of shit, it probably is.

I have a little story that I hope will remind some of you about an important part of supplementation...

Last night I was at work and got to talking with one of my co-workers about a member. She is extremely muscular and very butch. Here was my conversation with my co-worker:

Me: "She fascinates me... I wonder what she's on... I wish it wasn't so impolite to ask."
Him: "Ask her, she'll tell you."
Me: "No way!"
Him: "What? She orders some pills online that she was telling me about."
Me: "She orders them online and tells people about it? That's kinda risky isn't it?"
Him: "Well, only if they're illegal."
Me: "Uh, yeah, that's what I meant."
Him: "Why? You think she's using something illegal?"

Okay, that wasn't really an important part of the story, but I just thought it was hilarious and worth sharing. This woman was so hugely muscular that you had to be blind or really, really stupid to not know that she's taking more than just "some pills online".

Anyway, she left shortly after. On her way out, my co-worker asked her what those pills were that she was talking about. Turns out they're fat burners - cuz obviously, she's not on any additional hormones  . It left me wondering... if she doesn't have any clue what's in her fat burners, then how does she know she's not slowly killing herself or destroying her body with whatever else she's taking? Does she even know what she's taking for additional hormones or is she relying on someone else to know for her on that as well? Very scary...

Good Post!

That's what we always tell people here. Esp when you are talking to people who you don't have a close relationship with, you are probably not going to get a straight answer because, well some of the stuff is illegal. At the end of the day, diet & training will still get you the results....

It's really.. not anyones business..

I guess i think people should do whatever they feel comfortable with.

I know everything i put in my body, and although i might say it on this board, people in my eevery day life.. need not know

My point wasn't that it's anyone's business but hers... I totally agree with you... what one chooses to do in pursuit of a better body is individual and his/her business only... I find nutrition and supplementation to be fascinating, I am always curious... that's all...

My point was that people do some pretty stupid stuff not knowing what they put in their bodies... even the people who LOOK like they know, might not... and that you should always know enough about what you're taking to carry on an intelligent, educated conversation about it...

Yep - it is a tough topic. I still can't talk to my mom about how i eat without her getting that look on her face like "why don't you just eat normal"? For those who don't know shit but still ask you, you are sometimes better off just keeping it simple. For those who pop pills because their boyfriend or someone told them to, they just need to stamped w/ a "STUPID" sign. And if you try to tell them otherwise, they get all pissed. There the best thing you can do is just try to determine if they are really stupidly putting stuff in their body that they don't know what it is and tell them to at least check it out. If they do appear to knwo what they are doing, but won't tell you a straight answer, then you just let it go. They probably know whether or not you are able to call bullshit on them or not, but it really doesn't matter.

So yea, what CC said.

I'm saying some ppl might seem like they are confused because they are not giving you the real info
