JL's Lifting Journal

So after about 4 years away from the wieghts I'm back at it. I'm gonna keep this log here for some motivation and a record of what I do.

I used to love lifting the iron but I started training in mma and jiu jitsu and decided to stick with that, but after a couple of bouts with staph infection i've been stayin away from the mats lately. I still plan on training jiu jitsu here and there but not 5-6 days a week like before. I may log that training as well.

I'm currently 27 years old. 6'2" tall and 215 lbs. My goal is to be a lean 225 by this time next year.

For today's workout I went alittle easier because I haven't been feeling well. I've been fighting something off since last week.

Squats

135 x 5 x 5
185 x 5 x 5
205 x 5 x 5
185 x 5
These all felt easy. I did t want to over do it though.

Bench

135 x 5
185 x 5 x 5
205 x 5 x 5
again these felt easy. I felt strong today despite feeling I'll.

Barbell rows

135 x 5 x 5
185 x 5 x 5 x 5

the last set of 5 felt tough on the last rep.
It felt like a decent workout overall. I had the whole gym to myself so that was a bonus.
On the iPod I had Megadeth- Endgame

dam man, if all that felt easy after 5 years i can't wait to see what you hit in a few months from now. What are your old maxes?

To be honest I can't really remember my old maxes. I remember getting close to benching 300 lbs. I would really love to be able to push 3 plates per side though. When I was younger I was always envious of those who could bench 3 plates.

I should have mentioned that I've been liftin for about 5 weeks. I've basically just been benching, squatting, and rowing with 135lbs to get back into form. About a year ago I tried to just jump back into it and ended up hurting my back. So I'm using alot more patience this tim around.

Oh so you did 2 sets of 5 at 135? Why not just 1 set of 10? I usually write:
sets X reps X weight

IE
1x10x135

Today's workout

5 min light run

deadlifts

135 x 1 x 5
225 x 2 x 5
300 x 4
300 x 3

military press

100 x 2 x 5
115 x 2 x 5

lat pull downs

200 x 5 x 5

today's workout was pretty good despite feeling shifty still. I had the whole gym to myself again which is awesome.
I really need to work on my military presses. I feel weak in that area.
If I don't see any decent improvement on these I'm gonna do them Monday and Friday instead of flatbench.
On deadlifts 300 felt tough. I think I'll back off the weight a little bit next week.

Today's workout

5 mins light run

squats

135 x 2 x 5

185 x 5

225 x 2 x 3

245 x 1

265 x fail

Flat bench

135 x 2 x 5

185 x 5

225 x 2 x 3

135 x 12

BB rows

135 x 4 x 10

tough workout today. I went out for dinner before the gym and ate way too much spaghetti. If it wasnt for that I would have got the 265 squat. But whatever I'll get it next time. All the squats were ATG. I even emphasized it by sitting in the pocket for 2 seconds and then exploding up.
On bench 225 felt pretty good. I def could have squeezed out a few more reps, but I played it conservatively.

I swear everyone in the gym was training arms tonight. I think they were pumping up for the club.
One dude was wearing designer jeans and a sleeveless sparkly shirt. He cut me off into the squat rack and did what seemed like 100 sets of curls with a 5 on each side. FML.. Lol

Trained some jiu jitsu today. We did about 100 push ups and about 100 burpees.
We did some drills like hip tosses and throws. After about 45 mins of that we did full out sparring or "rolling" as we call it in jiu jitsu. After that class my body needs some recovery.

I felt good and strong today from all the squatting I've been doing. It's amazing how well squats carry over into sports. Even though jiu jitsu isn't about strength it sure couldn't hurt.
