It's Official! California is *DOOMED*

only one third of R&D money goes to discovering and create new drugs, the other two thirds is spend on advertising and marketing.

I hope the pharma-companies eat a fat dick on this one.

I was going to stay out of this, but here goes.

I agree that we do have the means to ensure all people have access to health care, but of what quality? Oregon came up with a plan that ensured EVERYONE got care, but they had to limit what was covered and not covered so the money would make something that works without creating a crushing tax burden.

I do blame the following for the outrageous costs of medical care....Doctors, Hospitals, Insurance Companies, and Lawyers.

Doctors don't have the ability to demand higher and higher pay, they can only request an amount that the market will pay. A doctor can ASK for a million dollars a year, but if no can pay it he goes out of business. This is the same for hospitals and insurance companies, they can only exist as long as others can afford their service.

Lawyers are different. They use the force of government to confiscate money, whether for real or made-up reasons. Not to mention they utilize the stupidity of the public to obtain their verdicts.

Doctors....For expecting outrageous incomes for a job that is mostly intended to benefit their fellow man. Only the rare specialist should expect much more than their contemporaries.

No person's services are for the benefit of others, they are for the benefit of the holder. I, and you, do not work to benefit others, we work to benefit ourselves. If my services are agreeable to others, then they pay for it and I am rewarded. I do my best to service other's needs only to promote my business and thus my rewards.

As I stated a doctor, or anyone, can EXPECT any income, but I can only receive what others agree to pay.

Hospitals....For being "for profit" institutions. Caring for the sick and injured shouldn't be about pleasing shareholders.

Profit improves the services of the business. I can pay for better doctors, better equipment, better facilities. No profit prevents my services to the customer.

Again, a doctor goes into practice to benefit himself, and his services secondarily benefit the public, but no one is required to become a doctor, so no one is obliged to health care.

Insurance Companies....For being "for profit" institutions. Their outrageous costs for malpractice insurance only forces Doctors & Hospitals to raise their prices.

Their outrageous costs is exacerbated by the exaggerated damages that juries award. So the public is also to blame.

Greed has brought us to a point that you CAN'T AFFORD health care without insurance.

The bastardized government/free-market system that we have is the major cause of our exaggerated costs. The Medicare system devours the young at the expense of the old, the healthy at the expense of the sick. With the advancing elderly population and the declining young, this will only increase. The concept of "free, unlimited" healthcare has been utilized by people to the extent of the idea. Go to the doctor for every cut, scrape and cough. But resources are not unlimited, nor free.

A free-market system would prevent doctors, hospitals, insurance companies from charging enormous fees, because you can only exist if others can pay, which would expand competition and lower prices. Doctors at the turn of the century could not charge huge fees, because they were paid by the individual, not a huge pool of money taken from the public or insurance firms. Death rates were higher, but this is due to inefficiency, lack of scientific knowledge, effective medical treatments, as well as a host of other variables.

the point is, this state is trying to get water from a rock.

Just to refute your metaphor, rocks can contain a lot of water depending on proximity to a water source and the particular rock type's porosity.
