I was looking at my 2nd place trophy from my final powerlifting meet

I was in the 181 lb. weight class but I only weighed 170. I was trying to diet down to the 165 class but missed by 5 lbs. My lifts were 215 kilos in the squat (474 lbs.) 155 kilos on the bench (342 lbs.) and 192.5 kilos on the deadlift (424 lbs.) None of those were personal bests but I was 20 lbs. heavier when I hit my PR's. Not bad lifting for a 170 lb. guy if I can brag a little. :) I also got shredded trying to make the 165 wt. class.

There is not much bragging here - your figures are damn good, especially for someone weighting so little, so you did a damn good job there. Besides, your second place is a good proof of that, means there was only one guy better than you, and most probably he was heavier than you.

Those are extremely impressive lifts for your body weight. You have huge potential for the 165 class. If you can drop 5 pounds before your next competition, I can see you really cleaning house in that category.

Great job!

I've been there too. there is no more awful feeling then stepping on the scale and failing to make weight after you busted your ass losing that extra 3-4 pounds at the last minute. then having to compete in a higher weight class and having to consume as much food as you can to gain back the weight.

people always think powerlifting is just a bunch of fat dudes with guts lifting heavy weight. they don't realize you have to be shredded to make weight. i was like 5-6% body fat at most when i competed.

One time I got to the early weigh in and was 7 lbs. over weight. It was being held at a YMCA which had a sauna in the locker room. It was in the middle of a cold winter so I had a heavy coat and long johns. I got in the sauna with the coat, blue jeans with long johns, and snow boots. I lost 7 lbs. of sweat in 2 hours to make weight. It was hell and I never did that again. I started getting dizzy and having panic attacks. I still hadn't recovered by the time the meet started the next morning despite drinking Gatorade all night. My lifts were about 5% lower than what I should have done.

^^^ the day of i wouldn't eat anything all day and very little water (not saying this is the smartest idea but thats what i rolled with).. then an hour before weigh in if i was still over i would put on a couple sweaters and jog to sweat out as much water as possible. it worked well but i was depleted as shit going into my competition and the next 3 days i would be absolutely dead

looking back i would have drank more water the day of.. and I would have had a shitload of carbs ready for after weigh in.

Either your bench is very strong, or your deadlifts are wayy too behind.

In any case - great results!

My deadlift always lagged behind. My first three years as a competitive powerlifter I didn't even train my deadlift until 3 weeks before the meet, LOL. I relied on the strength from my squat to transfer over to my deadlift (which it did to some degree). Basically my deadlift ended up always being 3 years behind my squat and bench. My best pull was 501 at a weight of 190 lbs. while I squatted 551 and benched 402 on the same day.
