I Want To Be A Serious Personal Trainer, Will I Make Good Money?

I hope to someday become a highly paid personal trainer. Do they make good money?, or will i have to win a Mr. Universe contest to be considered a legitimate personal trainer? Please give me some advice about the business.

IM a chiropractor, clinical nutritionist, trainer and competive bodybuilder...if you train realisictly 6 people per day at $30 per hr..$180 per day..is that good for you....yxeine the 2nd ranked womens bodybuilder in the world, winner of the arnold classic is training me and charges $40 an hr..this is south beach..to me...training people is a hobby..not my main source of income

hmm..

Its a hard gig and there is A LOT of competition. I live in San Diego and i used to be manager/partner at a small chain of Golds Gyms. Most trainers really suck, the problem is that the average person who hires a trainer is too ignorant to know it.

You'll have to get a second job for a while to build your clientele. Dont go into it relying on training alone, especially if you have a family to support. Down here most of the personal trainers are boneheads who just got out of the military and dont know jack shit about fitness. But they are still competition until you make a name for yourself.

Most gyms down here dont let freelancers in anymore so you'll have work for a gym that either has its own trainers and pays them (which isnt that bad if you do it right) or one that outsources to a private training company.

I dont know what the rest of the country is like but its pretyy rough down here. Once you are settled in though...it can be lotsa fun and if you are single.......oh my. I LOVED being a trainer when I was single.

good luck

The better shape you're in the more money you'll make. You've got to remember though, every person that picks up a weight wants to be a trainer. I doubt you could make a living at just training. At least not for quite some time.

Agreed. I live in San Diego as well and have a bunch of friends that train at 24 hr fitness. Personally I would never let them train me cuz they stink; however, they do make good money. Pay ranges for them from 14-28 dollars an hour. With more experience and more training, you obviously get more compensation for that. Definitely get a second job to start so you can build clientelle.

Peace

is $28/hr good money?.....fuck no! Listen you can make money, I do, but I have dedicated the last 5years of my life to building a business. I work 80hrs/week, every week. I charge alot. You have to weed thru the rough and grab at opportunities. Your body may get you a few clients, but your knowledge is what keeps them. Most trainers I know can't keep clients. I also know clients who are intimidated by guys that are too big and I deliberately hide my physique sometimes to make sure people are comfortable. Learn alot-work alot-and if your good you might make money.

Personally, I would probably pay someone at least $40-50/hr if they really knew what they were talking about. Unfortunately, most are college kids (or just out of college). I ask them what they won, are they a champion?
The answer they give me is all the tests they have passed, which I know are hard but it is still not real world.

I think you need to posess the following:
1) Face it, you have to be physically attractive and have a great physique.
2) Your credential have to be more than text books, what have you won? I want someone who knows what it takes personally.
3) You need coaching and motivation skills, along with being very personable.
4) You need someone supporting you financially at first...rich daddy, a working spouse, etc.
5) Be able to accept frustration, because most people won't stick to the program you give them. Most of the people are not going to be athletes seeking your advice, but instead lazy, fat people looking for the quick fix.

Honestly, I think there could be money in it. But if you truly had those 5 aforementioned qualities, you would make more money in Sells/Marketing. The people I know who do it, are women with a rich husband or they are like "animal b", they have dedicated themselves to the health field doing other things like chiropractics, nutrionist, a coach, etc.

Sorry, but that is the reality.

You have a good point. Being a trainer is almost like being a counselor. You have to be altruistic to really make it your profession, because you are really helping people, people who most of the time don't do what you tell them to do and it gets really frustrating.

I know this just from making up workouts and giving diet advice to my friends--guys will skip workouts, hog down whole pizzas, and complain that they're not getting results--well, DUH!

Trainers

I agree with everything u said except one.Not all trainers compete. Sure, i shoot roids and diet to stay lean and could compete but i have no desire to do so. I make money off my body yes and being physically attractive will make u money in training and stripping. I train people because it is something that i like to do and i get paid for it. A lot of the trainers i know do compete but a lot of them don't.However, it's not that they couldn't. I like being in the shape that i'm in for the babes.

i have a buddy of mine who is a trainer, him and his wife are both trainers, they have been doing it for years, he has competed before. I do not know how much money they make but that is their full time job and it seems to me that they are always in the gym from morning to night, as sometimes I go in the morning to work out and they are there and sometimes I go in at night and they are there and if I do a 2 day they are there. So as far as money goes, it must be worth their wild, by the way they seem to be the trainers that train more people at gym than any other trainers.
