I HATE bent over dumbbell Rows... Are they REALLY necessary?

I mean I hate doing those more than squats. They are just pure ditch digging manual labor hard ass work. I enjoy doing most exercises but man do I dread that one. I guess because you lift relatively heavy weight and strain massively and use LOTS of energy to do so.

So I was wondering are they an absolute must to have a good looking back?

Yea, your right. If it was easy everybody would do it and we wouldn't get as many chicks. But I still hate that lift.

There is no one excercise that's an absolute must. It's a simple cost-benefit thing. Is the pain and misery worth the gains you get from the excercise? If so, you chalk it up to the list of lifts you hate and do them anyway. If not, do something else. There are plenty of other back excercises.

Wouldn't seated rows be somewhat interchangeable with bent over rows? Or even bent over barbell rows? Is there anything that bent over dumbell rows offer that those other exercises don't?

Personally, I find that, as with most row or press excercises, I get a better range of motion with the dbs. Does it make a huge difference? Probably not.

But I agree with you on the seated rows. I think they'd be a good alternative. I did them yesterday in fact, one arm at a time. It's almost the same excercise.

For some reason, I ABSOLUTELY IN LOVE WITH BENT OVER DB ROWS!!!!

It seems to be great! Not only you work for mass, but width as well, or so it seems.

EVer seen your lats under heavy dumbell weight? I can just see how my wings are getting longer and longer, plus thickenss... IT IS THE RANGE OF MOTION!

yeh baby!! Cant wait till monday to them again!!!!

wow... that's one of my favorite excercises

I love db rows ! back is one of my weak points but I actually look forward to the point in my workout when I get to do db rows. for some reason they really get my heart going and the sweat pouring.

I use to hate doing them but not anymore its grown into a I don't really care for them movement but I don't despise doing them at least anymore.

my favorite is using the seated row w/ a close grip nuetral handle and pulling it alongside my legs towards my hips/stomach not my chest. Crap I usually pull on the handles outward as well like trying to rip the handles apart and my lats feel like there trying to escape my body pushing out sideways.

I do my bent over rows with dumbbells about 60 percent of the time and barbells the rest.

I do not like doing one dumbbell at a time with my knee on a bench,

I prefer standing, bent at the waist using both dumbbells simultaneously.

Great ROM and great pump.

Also since you mentioned you are not fond of squats, try front squats.

u hate them more than squats because of the strain?? sorry bro no offense than you are definately not squatting hardcore. no way dumbell rows are more exhausting than an all out set of squats. no they are not necessary but they are effective. its all a matter of how much training drive you have. sure it would be easier to just choose the exercises that least strain you. but the ones that are more difficult and exhausting are alot more effective

Good point Mike P. T. I mean I will continue to do them but I really don't like them. And squats do strain me alot. But for some reason I like dumbbell rows less than squats. I guess because I know squats are going to make my legs big and sometimes I wonder how big my lats are going to get with dumbell rows comparitively.
