I am NEVER doing this exercise again...

Ever say that about an exercise before?

I remember saying that about the flat bench press once...and I didn't do it for a long time. I remember being stuck at 225 x 3 for months. Granted...I was not training properly to overcome that battle...but I was stuck for a long time. I picked a new exercise.

I did wide grip, elbows out dips for probably 6 months or more. I would do dips then incline presses. I remember really growing for a while and I would have killer dip sessions mainly because with every rep I was cussing the bench press.

The first time I went back to the flat bench press, I did 225 x 8 I think. Not completely for sure...but I am pretty sure I did get 8 reps with it.

Ever give up an exercise before????

Yup.

I've given up on:

Leg extensions, leg curls, concentration curls, flyes, etc...

And I'm never trying them again.

When stalling, changes exercises is a good idea anyway.. :)

decline dbell presses. after i partially dislocated my shoulder for "squeezing" too tight at the top. but i can dip all day, go figure.

Decline DB presses. Seems to really Fubar my shoulder. I injured my shoulder in High school(10 years ago) and no matter what I do I just can't get it right.

I am trying to isolate the muscle right now to strengthen it, but I can't decline bench BB or DB high weight because of it. I do the BB, just not high weight.

Bench.

Gave it up for 6 weeks and did nothing but Inclines, dips and flyes.

MAx moved up 30 pounds after I went back

Don't have the photographic memory that my old workout partner had....glad you remember!!!!

Remember the first time I benched 315? :)

Same, flat barbell

Still don't like them very much, but I do them sometimes for variety

Same here. Once I got into dbs, they are 75% of my chest workout. I do bar for variety as well, but moreso incline.

B-fold I gave up on almost any curl routine out there I hate curls.... So all I did really was just barbell curls 3 sets after back and that is it. Now finally I am doing an arm day and the poundage I use is almost twice what I did when i started......

flat bench is the king,PERIOD!you can do all these weird exercise but you must bench, how else will you build upper body strength?the bench is like the squat to the legs

no it isnt, weighted dips are the squat for the upper body, flat bench sucks most strongmen dont do it at all, r u telling me they have small upper bodys? incline press and overhead strength is where its at if you want to be huge, our prissy society for some reason is just fascinated by bench, anyone can bench 300 pounds eventually, u show me a guy that can push press 400 and im impressed

weighted dips??what kind of idiot are you?!you mean to tell me they will build my chest,?????maybe tri's but you don't know what the hell you're talking about.and bythe weay i compete in bodybuilding not strongman.seems to me most of them are fat.so how much muscle is being built now, smart ass.have a great day:finger:

haha most of them are fat, kazmaier, svend karlsen, juoko ahola, whit baskin these guys are fat? please, most strongmen arent fat and if they choose to be it is only because of their diet choices, the ones that watch their diets example svend karlsen are cut as shit. And with regards to u flaming me, u said total upper body strength, in fact many lifts regard weighted dips as the upper body squat, dont worry i will post these for u in a lil bit. And yes u can get a big chest with incline presses, and look at every old time olympic lifter or strongman, they hardly every did bench if they did it at all, their main focus was on overhead lifting and they had some of the biggest chests i have ever seen for example serge redding. I did not flame u at all in my post, nor did i insult u in any way, i merely stated that i differed from ur opinion and that too many people put too much emphasis on bench press. There are so many other lifts that are better. And on the contrary to what u think many strongmen are pure muscle, u go up to kazmaiers face or aholas and tell them that they are fat, on the contrary they are 330 pounds and 280 pounds respectively of solid muscle. No bb even comes close to kaz's pic at 330 at 7 percent bf. It is obvious thru ur ignorance of my post that you have no concept of real strongman training, i agree flat bench is important for building a huge chest, but it is not the King. Have a nice day

"deathonthefield oh and also, since u r a bb u do kno that if u lean forward when doing dips that it also works the chest"

dips have a higher rating on the EMG for chest too, don't they??

Let's please try and stick to the topic here guys...

Read my initial post...I did dips (elbows out and wide grip) for my chest for a long time.

Most strongmen never do flat work...most of our competitions are all overhead movements.

Svend is an IFBB pro bodybuilder, then powerlifter, now World's Strongest Man. He earns the ability to wear the shirt that says "FREAK" across it..lol

I've sworn off dbell flyes..several times...lol

I would never do pec dec flies again. I used to do these a long time ago before I got into powerlifting. Just the starting position with the arms and shoulders starting so far back makes me cringe.

Also behind the back dips. I did like 4 sets altogether in my whole life before I found out that they are shoulder injury producers, thank goodness I didnt get into that trap. I see guys in a commercial gym do these sometimes and I feel like I should go tell them to stop but I dont, perhaps I should.

If I was a powerlfiter/strong man - there are scores of ecercises I would not do:

Behind-the neck press
flyes
pec -dec where you are locking into a range of motion

etc...

Some strongman competitors actually do flyes...maybe to help squeeze the atlas stone when picking them up. I still think that the only way to be good at the stones...is to do them...a lot.

....interesting

I've cut out Behind the neck presses for a couple of years now. Shame, cause they really used to be my bread and butter for size and strenght in my shoulders.

I was doing 215 seated (and i remember the exact pondage and rep to this day cause i'm still paying for this screwup) and on the 6th rep as i was lowering the bar back down the bar drifted backwards. Didnt move that far at all but enough to screw up my rotator but good.

Months off and alot of rotator work and i'm good to go again though. But now theres no way in hell i'm risking that exercise again. Just took a momentary lack of concentration and BAM!

I also kinda avoid flyes. Talk about adding recovery time to your chest! Takes me an extra week to fully recover from them!

its a shame you had to learn that way bro. but good deal you are back in the game. :)

For me it was upright rows. I stopped doing them after I started getting wrist problems. I tried them again recently, but I went really light and didn't lift too high. I still like the lift, but I think its a tad to painful on the wrists.

i would love to be a strongman one day.
i have the frame (6"4, wide built frame and only 16 yr so still growing) but im not very big and my lifts suck....

is there like any hope or are all these guys the kind that go into the gym for the first time and total 1000+

You're the one that controls hope. If you want it bad enough, you'll get it bro. Go check out B Fold the Truth's before pics in the chat board.

Rob Jan its all about determination, some have a gift but if they don't use the gift it is wasted. No one ever started out at the top its getting there that makes it fun....

If you ever need any help..just email me.

You can do anything...you just have to believe in yourself..deep down inside.

I'm never gonna do the tire flip again...well...till next week.

Anyone have any other exercises they refuse to do?

B True

Upright rows for me. They always screw up my wrists for some reason. Same with straight barbell curls. I used to love doing that exercise but after my accident i can't do them without feeling pain anymore.

I also gave up on bench for the past month. I wasn't getting anywhere with it so I decided to try and change up my chest routine.

Flat Bench Presses.

I gave them up in 1997, because I discovered that the incline was a superior movement for OVERALL pectoral development. Since I have given them up, my pectoral development has improved tremendously.

Free weight hack squats.

I just cannot got them right, and they do nothing but chew up the back of my legs.

how do you do those, is that the one where you hold the weight behind you with your arms extended downward?

Those are the ones. My ass gets in the way and the bar ends up draggin up the back of my legs, or across my calves on the way down. I have to twist my back to clear my ass. Uncomfortable and unsafe. Seems to screw more up than it benefits for me.

I have heard a few guys in here say they have done them, and they worked great for them. Don't figure.:D

upright rows are an absolute bitch
whether it is just bad flexibility but they used to tear away at the rotator cuff when bringing the bar above the chest.
Never again

Here is my list:

Deadlifts
Squats
Calve Raises
Lateral Raises
Military Presses
Rows

Now I do them all...thanks to a good bro I can train with, and all these made my overall strength go through the roof....I will never say never again....

I gave up dips for a while after getting my dick caught in the chain that held the weight. I am slowly getting comfortable with them again. I really thought that it ripped my dick off, no injury though!

I have given up squats because the free gym where I work only has a SMith machine. But I am doing quite well with sumos and machine front squats and lunges. I am on a committee that is coming up with recommendations and believe me a power rack will be near the top of that list!

I gave up and pulling movements behind the neck but just started again because I read in a book that behind the neck pull ups work the lower lats more. That's something I honestly thought I would never do again.

Oh yeah I have given up cleans and snatches of all kinds because I am into BBing now not power training for football. I may mess around with them again but doubt that they will ever be a serious part of my repertoire.

I have pretty much given up all plyometrics for the same reason as above

I have pretty much given up neck and forearm exercises.

I gave given up conventional DLs but just for the time being while I concentrate on Sumos for a while.

I have given up on leg extensions because I read on here they put a lot of bad torque on the knee and I have marginal knees (don't hurt when I take care of them but they will hurt if I run a lot and/or do leg extensions)

Damn I have probably given up more exercises than some of the people on here even do!

i have a herniated disk (or maybe more by now i dont know i havent had it checked in years , don't have health insurance) and I gave up on deadlifts a few times already. But I realize now that it's for the best I do them as I wanna bulletproof my lower back.
