I recently hurt my right shoulder bench pressing a few weeks back. I layed off of it for a while, and it felt a bit better. I started to lift heavy again this past weekend, and i guess i didnt fully let it heal(I know i am stupid for trying again, but i was getting very impatient), and now it hurts more than ever. It feels more like a pinch in my shoulder when i lift. Even when i go to raise my arm it hurts a bit. Just wondering if anyone else has had this, and how long it took to heal. I really dont want to take any time off lifting because i get depressed and feel as if i am shrinking(especially with summer here.lol). THanks

If it hurts from just lifting your arm I reccomend you see a doctor. They might be able to give you some good rotator cuff exercises and one of those rubber band things to use for resistance. Depending upon how serious it is, you may go to a physical therapy for a little. That is the quickest way to recover though.

classic example of rotator cuffs not being able to handle the weight....no doubt your chest muscles could handle it though. strengthening your rotators would have prevented some of this. now, you're at a critical point...do you say "screw it, i'll take a day or two off then come back and continue to lift heavy, or do i take the necessary time off and let it heal properly?" dude, listen to your body right now..it's telling you to BACK OFF. so what if you shrink some while letting your body heal. just think how much you would shrink if you totally tore your shoulder and had to lay out for a year or so? the price you have to pay lifting heavy, but definitely be smart and lay off for awhile.

i speak from experience in shoulder problems. i'm getting over a bad injury now. by me not listening to my body i am out of commission for at least six months. also i'm possibly looking at shoulder surgery.

a shot of cortisone is the WORST thing you could do. i'm sure you're not competing at a pro level and your income depends on weight lifting. all cortisone will do is eliminate some of the pain but not the problem.

Be smart...Listen to your body, it's your only reliable source. :fro:

you dont have to stop training

just stop all exercises that are known for bothering the RC like barbell bench, upright rows, and behind the neck press

Barbell bench press does not hurt your rotators...doing the bench press incorrectly hurts your rotators.

It seems as if your rotator cuffs are your limiting factor in the progress of your bench press. You should really focus on it for a while (rotator work) to prevent further injury as well as to increase your bench press.

yeah dude, benching does nothing to the rotators ... improper form does. work on the rotators, strengthen them up, work on form, and youll be good to go. mine used to hurt when going heavy. now its nothing.

I hurt my shoulder some time ago. It took me 1 1/2 years and 3 doctors to get it fixed (without surgery!). I found an articale on Prolotherapy in M&F. Did some research and then found a doctor that's on my insurance plan. That took an addtional 1-2 months. Do some research on this and find a 'pain management' doctor. It took me 2 months (4 shots) and now I'm back in the gym. The second doctor almost had me going to the operating room! Read up on this. Trust me, I had the same experence!

could you describe the correct way to execute this lift?

I have read over 100 different descriptions and tried many of them I can't find a way to do it that dosen't hurt my suprispinatus.

The only thing I could do to prevent the damage is to stop where my upper arm is parallel to the floor with the bar a few inches from my chest.( I feel this would be a cop-out)

I actually feel like I will never be able to bench again:(

I'm interested in what you have to say B True.
