I'm 38 and my last interest turned out to be 20. We noticed each other, and the body language flirting began soon after. Of course, that let to talking and getting to know each other. There were definitely some sparks there, damn. I loved the way she lit up whenever she saw me coming. She was a cross between Gina Gershon, that gypsy girl in the movie "Thinner", and that girl that played Will Smith's love interest in "Hitch". I was hoping desperately that she just looked like a young 30 or 27 at the very youngest. My heart sank when I found out she was just 20. I cut all ties, because of the potential complications. And it still sucks when I think about it, even after a couple months now.
Same thing happened early last year. She turned out to be 20, also. I tried to create distance before it went to the next level. But she didn't want to give up, and she tried to get me to spend her 21st birthday with her. Like one more year would make a difference.
When I was 32, I dated a 19 year old, because she pursued me and I didn't see any harm in it at the time. It didn't work out because her and I were just too far apart maturity-wise. Then when I was 34, I dated a 22 year old. She would ask her friends to guess my age, and they would answer 23-25. She seemed to like it when they would be surprised after she told them my real age. Although she was fun to be with, I knew she wasn't relationship material so I ended that one, too. I knew I didn't want to invest years into a relationship that would just end up not working out. That's a big fear for me, especially now since I'm almost forty.
It seemed OK for years to be taken for younger than I actually am. But now I want to be seen for my age. I was told just a few weeks ago by a co-worker that I look about 28. Sometimes I think a woman my age wouldn't be interested in me because she would assume I'm years younger than her.
I really would like to meet someone closer to my age, but I have yet to meet a woman who I feel sparks for, since they are already taken or they let themselves go by the time they reach that age. There have to be some great catches out there that I would be happy with, and I keep looking.
I wouldn't even consider dating someone younger than 28-30.
