How do Torrents work ?

Ok let's say I have this link

Now what am I suppose to do. When I tried to dowload the file, it came up with a 36k file that had nothing. Pretty useless. Do I need another program ? Is it better to just stick to Limewire and other P2P prgram since its less BS ?
 
ok, download bittorrent.
install program
run program
double click the madonna torrent file
download will start, if the torrent is not dead.

azureus is a resource hog...i never liked it.

there sure is an inner circle. the best torrent sites on the net are private, and you need to be invited to them, share as much as you download, and maybe donate 5 bucks here and there.

but....oh is it worth it.

they always have EVERYTHING you could ever possibly want or need, there are never dead torrents, you can request stuff and have someone setup a torrent in a matter of hours, the speeds are always incredible, etc, etc, etc, etc.

i got lucky, and this guy gave me an invite to Oink, because i had something obsure he wanted.

Nah, I just search on torrentz. I'm mostly a dvd-rip movie guy. I keep a bunch on a big file server at the house, play them through a chipped x-box on the big screen.

i need a workhorse of a latptop come fall semester. who would you go with? dell?

About $2500 for the desktop (8gig, 4x250gig SATA, 7600GT, 2xLCD)

The file servers are old...bought off ebay or just parts. A Dual celeron system with 1TB in it. A couple of rack mounts running shit. Cheap, cheap off of ebay.

Laptops.... argh. The last one I had bought for me (long story) was a Toshiba. The damn thing ran hot. Eventually fried the video card. Come to find out it was a long standing problem but it shit the bed after the warranty was out.

Depends if you want a laptop as a desktop replacement or just something to mess around with. I'm a huge beiliever in massive screen resolution and tons of memory. Those are the two things that I'll always work backward from. Dell and Toshiba tend to top my shopping lists.
 
If you a want a GOOD bittorrent client use uTorrent http://www.utorrent.com/
It's light and nog hog resources as Azureus. And for torrents you can go to:
demonoid.com there are a variety of stuff.
bitme.org if you want elearning stuff (and invite It's neccesary go enter)
 
jnuts, did you ever check out the Adobe Photoshop Elements 3.0 version you said you would look into to make sure it was virii free?

I'm not running windows.....no virus scanners on my machines.

Can't help ya on that one.

I used to have seven home boxes but I grew tired of the heat and noise since I don't have A/C. Now I have a fanelss NLX form factor Celeron 400 FreeBSD box w/a big disk as file server and dual Xeon 1.8ghz/1.5GB RAM XP box as workstation. I run Freebsd and Ubuntu thru vmware guests on it. I need to get dual 19-20" LCDs so I can always have the vmware guest on it's own screen.
I have a Cobalt Qube2 that I'm trying to get NetBSD on for my fileserver.

Yeah, I need to try and condense all of these machines down into a couple....

I just moved 6 machines out of the office closet and put them in the garage. They were putting out too much heat. The Mrs. was starting to get the beak, so out they went. It's ghetto cooling in the garage - the sides are off the machines and 2xBigAssBoxFans are pointed at the machines. I just finished re-running all the new cat5 lines. I hate doing shit in the attic.

If I had the extra cash I'd just get a mobo that supports SATA drives and use those as the fileserver. Right now it's a mix of IDE and SATA.
 
D_T see my previous post for Jnuts and see if you can cover for him. This time. I swear, man been slacking off lately.... :)

Bro, there were "additions" added to PSE4.0 that make it extremely hard to run batch jobs and stuff for a lot of the digital photographers. Many people are complaining and reverting back to PSE3.0

Also, last time I downloaded an app and installed it, it was full of virii and I lost my harddrive.

no ps elements 3.0 here...just a bunch of different releases of 4.0 and about a bazillion other ps programs.

Bitme.org allow only elearning stuff, things from computer courses like: Courses about using Office to courses in how to do programming computers, also bodybuilding stuff, documentaries from discovery channel, history channel, etc, and much more. The most interesting stuff I've got from bitme are the Rosetta Stone courses. Rosetta Stone is dedicated to produce courses to learn languages, I haven't learned another one apart from English :-) (Spanish is my native language) but I have a lot of courses from RS maybe one day I'll learn another one. maybe German!

Demonoid.com has stuff like MP3s, movies, software even elearning stuff, etc.

but i also uploaded some stuff people liked.
 
If you d/l torrents do the right thing and keep it running for an hour or three after your d/l finishes. If everybody shutdown after their d/l was done YOU would have never gotten the file yourself. Do unto others...

im so clueless to how this shit works , but say i dl a movie , and it is multiple files , is there a way i can make it all one file to watch it like a reg movie

I use a program called "AVI MPEG RM WMV Joiner" that merges all the files into one big file that I then burn to disk.

It's not uTorrent fault, speed depends of your download speed and the speed of the seeder. The seeder si the one that is sharing the stuff your are downloading, and as you can if he has a shitty speed there's not too much you can do.
