I was 16, she was 14. The first time we went out, she broke down and cried about a time a year before where I turned her down when she asked me out, and I ended up making out with someone else. She also told me she had a crush on me since she was 11. Of course, we didn't go all the way that night but when morning came, I was crazy about her. I actually didn't want to go out with her at first because she was younger than me and I was crazy obsessed with a hot 18 year old that I didn't have a chance in hell with. After the first night though, I never thought about that 18 year old again. But she was very pretty, and I would sometimes hear other guys talking about how cute or pretty she was, while not knowing that I was going out with her. We had been going out together for about 6 months (but not going all the way) when one night we were supposed to meet at a party on a friday night. The party was going down at a place across the street from where I lived. Everyone was out of the house except me, and I was getting ready to head over to the party. I walked out the door and started walking around the house, and there she was, coming up the sidewalk. I asked, "what's going on?" and she told me an argument broke out there and she wanted to get out of there. It was the dead of winter out and there was snow all over the place. I never said a word, we just turned around and went back into the house. We went directly to my bedroom and sat on the bed and talked. Well, I tried to talk to her, but she was all over me. We layed down on the bed and kissed, then I got out my cassettes (it was 1985) and asked her what she wanted to listen to. She put on Tom Petty's "Damn the Torpedoes" and the we proceeded with the rest of the night. Wow, what a night!
Later on, at about midnight, I woke up, and realized that we both fell asleep. My parents were getting home from a night of bowling and I had no way to get my girlfriend out of the house. Later on, after I knew they were in bed, I tried to convince her that she had to go or we might get caught, but she didn't want to go. Actually, I didn't try to convince her very much because I didn't want her to go, either. It was more like, "uh, oh! What are we going to do in the morning?" and alot of laughing and giggling.
Well, the morning came, and we woke up about 9:00. She was stuck in my room and I knew from snooping around downstairs that my parents were planning one of their "stay home and do nothing all day" one of days. She was trapped now because there was absolutely no way she could go down the stairs and out the door without being seen.
At about noon or so, a buddy of mine came over and when he walked in my room he was pretty shocked to see my girl sitting on my bed. He knew instantly that she was trapped. My parents usually never came into my room, but that didn't mean that they wouldn't. I felt like it was just a matter of time before we got caught and we sat around trying to come up with a plan to get her out of the house.
The only thing we could think of was this: to drop her off the balcony. we were on the second story and it was kinda high up, but there was alot of snow on the ground and maybe that would break the fall a bit, we rationalized. Other people have jumped off it in the past just for the fun of it. Needless to say, she wasn't too excited about it. "No damn way!" were her exact words, I seem to recall. Anyway, we decided to head over to the balcony and look down to see how far it really was. Since it was winter, the family NEVER opened the balcony door at this time. but we went out to the balcony, and she climbed over the railing to try and sit down on the edge. Just then I heard someone coming up the stairs and ran back in to see who it was. It was my dad! He was going to wonder for sure why I had the balcony door open in the dead of winter letting in a bunch of cold air. I ran back over to the door and said, "its my dad!", and turned around to try and stall him or convince him to go back downstairs, or something. Sure enough, he asked what I was doing on the balcony and I said I wanted to see how cold it was outside. Just then, my friend came back in and closed the balcony door behind him. We both went back into my bedroom and as soon as I closed the door I asked, "what happened? where's ******?"
He said he had her by the hand as she hung over the side, and even though she was telling him, "don't let go! don't let go!" as soon as he heard my dad's voice, he opened up his hand and down she went.
We waited. As soon as the coast was clear, we went back out on the balcony, and I looked over the side and in the snow we could see where she landed and the footprints she left as she ran off back to her house. I was relieved, but as soon as I saw she was gone, I started missing her instantly.
Of course, my buddy told everyone and I didn't care one bit. That girl and i lasted over a year and a half after that and I was crazy about her. We were each other's first love. And Tom Petty's "Damn the Torpedoes" will always be one of my favorite albums.
