Help Guards pick his new hunting rifle:)

Rugers are very durable. Remingtons are the most accurate. Savage may be the best value. Scope makes more difference than gun manufacturer.

I'd recommend a 7mm Mag....flatter shot, more punch, and easier to resell these days. Magnums are in. Make sure the optics are very clear and get good rings. I would not get a real pricey scope if you hike in rough country....too easy to bang the scope on a rock. Gives it character though.

Magnums are out!!
At leat the long action ones. The craze today is the new short action mags. .300 WSM is great.

You ought to try thinking while you write bro. Does wonders for the logic.

BTW....the .338/378 Weatherby has taken over for Colorado elk hunting. Not exactly short action since it is the largest commercial case in North America.

I hunt in CO every year. I have 2 6X6's in the books. That big of gun isn't practical at all. there is no need for bigger than a .300 win mag or 7mm or 30-06 for that matter. That is an overkill for sure. That cailber has faded like no other. I used to own one. By the way what grain bullet were you shooting and how many g's of powder were you using in you reloads? I bet you were not using factory loads,,right? If you were you wre wasting the full potential of that gun. there is only one company that makes loads that really do that caliber justice. What primers etc? The .338 is a popular gun, but check out he ballistics on it. It just doesn't make sense. Granted the gun doesn't kick much, because of the slower buring powder, but the short action calibers are all the craze right now. Low recoil, long distance is in.

Alright lads, let's try to come to a conclusion cause i have money burning a hole in my pocket.

Caliber: The concensus seems to be that 30-06 is the most versatile. I think I'll go with it.

Rifle: It's either a Remington 700 ADL synthetic with detachable mag or a Ruger 77 all weather.......which one?

Scope: This is where i am stumped. Cheap or expensive? What brand and model?

You went with Keith? He's good shit, eh?

For a hunting rifle, keith would be a little too pricey. He did the work on my sniper rifle though....he is the best in the business here in Canada IMO.

Yup I bought his "Precision model". Pricey indeed but hell, that beats anything I tried before. Even the good ol' Parker Hale...

I didn't read through your links so I don't know if you have this one down but have you considered a 7 mag as an option. One of me best friends hunts whitetail with it and it is plenty big to drop a moose. Someone said a 22-250......? You would have to put 3 rounds in the mooses head to drop him. LOL Bam

Anything beats a C3 parker-hale.....piece of shit IMO.

He made my Rem700 custom......mostly stock work with a tricked out mechanism and specialized barrel.

You can't go wrong with milcun.
