Guys who've proposed how much did you spend on a ring?

When i left me ex I told him to shove that ring up his ass. We paid for it on my credit card anyway. It was 1.1 carats and we got in at cost or just above cost i think it was $2500 this was in 1994. I think the ring appraises at $4900

I spent $5K on my ex-wife's ring, it's a 3/4c beautiful princess cut with 3/4c worth of smaller diamonds around the setting. Never failed to make other women gasp when they saw it, my ex is very proud of it. And really, that's all that matters.

The whole ring concept is just silly and superficial. I wonder how many women would rethink their relationship if the guy said "honey i don't believe in buying rings but i love you". What would they say to their Friends? Who would that look.

I found it funny that when i got engaged with my GF, ALL the women were like friggin voltures circling around her screaming "the ring" "the ring", "let's see the ring"

Never mind tell me about the guy, when can we meet the guy, how's the guy? Not even an "are you happy". What i'm getting at is the engagement really showed us the vanity of most females. My GF did not even want a ring. She's a keeper.

You'll never get that money for the ring. It's just a paper appraisal done on all jewlery. The actuall value in cash will be close to half what you payed for it.

Unless of course it's insured and stolen....

You americans with your big engagement rings. Sounds like you're all whipped into submission when it comes to this. Buy her a nice ring, and if she demands a bigger, more expensive one, tell her to buy it herself.
Isn't marriage supposed to be about love, and not about entering a "contest" on who's got the biggest engagement ring in your circle.
I guess it's a culture thing

I'm European and i agree. I live in the USA and what you say is so true. Having not grown up in the American Culture i can see this tradition for the VANITY it really is. It's sad to see that so many American woman derive their esteem and measure of accomplishment in their lives from a sparkly thingy.
