I was reading a post by Frank Shamrock(the fighter) on his site and this is what he said about squats:
"I do have rather large legs for my size and I equate that to two things: total leg development and lots of free squats. I found out about 6 years again that weighted squats killed my low back as well as made my knees hurt for days. I cut them out of my leg routine and replaced them with heavy angled legs press. Any angled leg press (45 degrees is most common) is great for building mass as long as your technique is good. I also upped the number of free squats that I was doing and how often I was doing them. It was during that time that I noticed some interesting changes happening to my legs. Because I wasn't doing heavy squats I had to work my hamstrings and extensions more to keep them in balance. Some people grow with a lot of leg reps and some grow with heavy weight and power movements. I found that I grew at a good rate with a combo of them both. Free squats and angled leg press are the king of leg work outs. PS: Don't forget your calves..."
Interesting considering he has pretty well developed legs. He does say that he broke his back in two differant places so that would explain his not doing squats. Here is the article from Testosterone.net-
